  1. Whataburger or Bennigan's. I like both of those places, but we don't have them out here.
  2. This reminds me of the case from a couple of years ago, when the UDV church got into trouble for importing hoasca tea (which contains DMT, a Schedule I drug) into the US. They argued that it was used for religious purposes and that to confiscate their tea violated their rights to religious freedom. The case ended up at the Supreme Court, and the Court decided that the UDV could continue using their tea. I am sort of wondering if the FLDS case will end up at the Supreme Court. What exactly does "religious freedom" give people the right to do? If I start my own religion, can I ignore certain aspects of the law and get away with it if I say that it is necessary for practicing my religion?
  3. I think that if you use a dictionary, you'll find that none of the stuff you mentioned has anything to do with whether you are an atheist or not.
  4. It was a long time ago, but I think it took about a month. I used a training kit like this: http://www.citikitty.com/. But yeah, they mostly train ME to do things.
  5. I trained one of my cats to use the toilet (for pooping/peeing, not for puking). It was so cute. But for some reason, I could never get his sister to learn to use it, so I had to go back to using the litter box for both of them.
  6. I'm trying to think of something, but I pretty much did whatever the hell I wanted to even before I was an adult. But I guess now I can do whatever the hell I want to do, in my own house, without my parents knowing about it.
  7. The LDS claim that they have absolutely no affiliation with the FLDS, which would make it different than the Catholic Church situation. (Well, unless that claim is not true.)
  8. I'm pretty sure that the LDS do not condone incest, so why should they pick up the tab?
  9. I don't get those errors since I am using Mosaic.

Umm... He's dead. I don't think he minds if he's got a bit of dust on him.

So, what do you suggest as a better alternative? Just ignore any possible child abuse unless a cop happens to witness the abuse when it happens? Yes, it sucks that people are sometimes falsely accused, but I believe the false cases are in the minority. I think that there are probably a lot more "real" cases that never get reported than there are false accusations.
  12. I tend to disagree. But either way, the children have no more say in whether their parents use drugs or commit incest, so I think they should be treated the same in either situation.

CPS doesn't just take an anonymous phone call about child abuse and then go to that person's house and take their children. They will investigate the situation and take the children if they feel there is actual evidence of abuse. I spent a couple of years working for a place that dealt with abused children (in TX), and I never saw a case where children were taken away from their homes without a pretty good reason. And even if the children are taken away, the alleged abuser is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. But in a child abuse case, CPS can't just leave the children in their homes until after the court date, because they will generally be at risk in that situation.

Yes, I am sure. I'm just telling you that I don't think the same thing that you think regarding the government lying about the phone call. But since I have no way of knowing whether I am right or wrong, I certainly can't prove anything to you.
  15. I don't know if I would call it a "far more informed decision than a drug addict." I think that most people are aware that drug abuse during pregnancy can cause medical problems for the baby.
  16. And to answer your OP, I don't know. When it says this: That makes me think that they are getting the same treatment that anyone else who qualifies as "poor" or "indigent" in the state and that they are not being given special treatment.(???) So I guess these children have just as much right to medical care as any other children who have medical problems due to their parents' poor choices.
  17. I think that in any place where polygamy is illegal, these people are not legally married, and therefore not technically polygamists anyway. And I think that if polygamy was legal and practiced throughout the U.S. by those who choose to, it would be obvious that it has nothing to do with sexual predation. A lot of the consenting adults who choose polyamorous-type relationships would probably choose plural marriages as well if they were legal, and I doubt that we would see a correlation with sexual predation in those cases. So, unfortunately, the "polygamists" we hear of (in the U.S.) are typically of the type in this FLDS case, where it is also (allegedly) normal for older men to "marry" underage girls, so it apears as if the two (polygamy and marrying underage girls) are somehow related, when in reality I don't think they are.
  18. Sorry, this has nothing to do with the point of your thread, but... This sort of bugs me. I seriously doubt that polygamy has anything to do with sexual predation.

I'm not trying to prove you wrong, as I do not know whether they are lying or not. But I have no reason to believe that they are lying about it.
  20. OK, now that sounds like fun. It's been too long since I last floated the Guadalupe. I think I'll plan on doing that when I go back to TX this summer.
  21. Hmm.... That's actually not a bad idea.
  22. It's not clear, but it sounds like he also quit drinking eight pints of lager every night. I would imagine that played a big part in his losing weight. And he might even have less gas after giving up the beer and the crappy food he was eating.
  23. Cool, I'm gonna go read all of your PM's now.

The link I posted is about the Texas case. And doing a news search will give you more info about that case. If you think it's just a big government conspiracy, fine; I can't prove to you that it's not. But I don't believe it is. I also don't believe that anyone in this case is necessarily guilty (because I don't have enough information to say that), but it sounds like there was enough evidence to take the children into temporary custody while the situation is further examined (which is what they are doing). It's a horrible situation for the kids inolved, but I'm not sure how it could be handled differently.
