That's not a fair comparison since there are far more people riding motorcycles than there are people hucking themselves off of fixed objects. I say there are no accidents in motorcycling (every incident could have been avoid with proper respect and training). The same can not be said for all skydiving/BASE jumps where the person did everything right and still died. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Wet roads are NOT to be feared if you've got good tires, the right attitude and some experience. Icy roads? Now that's a different story. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

It's your responsibility as a motorcyclist NOT to put yourself into a situation where one of these morons will take you out. Take a Motorcycle Safety Foundation style training course if you've never taken one. They will teach you survival skills such as counter steering, emergency braking techniques, object avoidance (this includes driving over some objects even when traveling at highway speeds) and they will teach you where to position yourself in traffic for maximum visibility. Oh and intersections are the most dangerous places for motorcyclists, so enter them with extreme caution and care. As to which one is more dangerous, BASE jumping or motorcycling? My vote is for the sport which draws people to show the least respect, the most complacient behaviour and the one where you're more likely to do while intoxicated. With that I can't vote in your poll because both disciplines are NOT safe and I do them both. But for you average Joe, they do take riding a motorcycle too lightly and many of them (despite what they think) don't know what they're doing since they don't know how to counter steer, have little emergency braking practice, usually place themselves in danger veering away from obstacles on the road they can easily ride over and have the faintest idea where to position themselves in traffic for maximum visibility. So I'm guessing for most of us BASE has the potential to be safer because most (not all) BASE jumpers do look at safety as an important issue before they jump. So you're telling me that you're voting Liberal because you don't like Harper and that you like the corrupt status quo? Or is your vote going to go for the NDP which has absolutely no chance at all? Well at least if you do vote for the NDP it won't be a vote for Liberals. Oh and I thought the parlamentary system didn't put as much emphasis on a single leader like a republic political system does? So why all this fear over one man? It's not like he's going to send us off to war because his god told him to invade a country in his sleep. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

if you're going to speak English, do it properly

I think any hiring policy where the best candidate is not chosen is not a good policy no matter where you are. Contrary to what many of you think, things are fucked up all over the place. Many skilled immigrants in Canada are not allowed to work in the fields of their expertise due to the fact that many Canadian companies do not recognize their foreign credentials. In some cases this may be a valid argument but in many cases it's clearly racism at work. So some of these skilled immigrants have decided to return to their own countries or go somewhere else. But you can't sit there with a straight face and tell me everything in your beloved US of A is all rosy as well. I say life as we know it, used to know it or wish to know it by in North America and Europe is on the decline and there's not much we can do about it as long as corporations put the almighty dollar above everything else and the Walmart culture is allowed to thrive. Manufacturing has already decided to checkout into more lucrative environments such as China and Inda and technology is quickly following it on it's heals. So what's left for us to do here? Low paying service jobs? Things are fucked up everywhere you look. Canada, the US of A and Europe are all on a decline. Oh course the federal government here in Canada is a corrupt bunch of SOBs so this hiring policy doesn't surprise me. And what blows me away is that even though the proof of this corruption is there in front of all Canadians noses to see, too many Canadians are afraid to try another government and continue to vote for the same status quo election after election. We're going to have another election very soon and even though my vote will be for a different political party, my money is on another minor liberal government because those morons in Ontario who have all the political power ... sorry to insult you ... no actually I'm not sorry ... continue to vote for this same corrupt liberal political party where entitlement and privilege for themselves is more important than the good of the rest of the country. This time around I can't fault K-becers for losing their interest in Canadian federation. Dang is there an island I can move to to get away from all this crap? Hmmm ... Australian and New Zealand are islands aren't they? Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

0:4:0 After one month of wet WX here in the Pacific Northwest, I finally got to do some skydiving this Saturday. It wasn't a lot and jumping is a whole lot more expensive up here, but it was better than nothing. But there was no jumping to be had today as fog covered the whole entire lower mainland here in BC. getting jump number up. how often do you jump?

CanuckInUSA replied to arai's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
That's impossible to do here in Canada and contrary to what many yanks think ... the doors are not open to just move to the states because you want to find cheaper places to jump. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -
getting jump number up. how often do you jump?
CanuckInUSA replied to arai's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Then weather is less than ideal here in the winters. But I did make four jumps at a Vancouver area DZ today (my first jumps in a month ... yes because of our recent wet weather) and that's four more jumps than I would have made in any other Canadian city. At least we can jump. And to answer your question, we jump as much as we afford to and as much as Mother Nature will let us jump. Dang this is an expensive sport and as addictive as hard core drugs. Possible stolen rig? Maybe ... maybe not?
CanuckInUSA replied to CanuckInUSA's topic in Gear and Rigging
Criticize me if you want. But go back and read the ad. The spelling and grammar is of a primary school level and in a city with tons of crack-heads commiting property crime to fuel their habits on a website NOT frequented by skydivers just sent out the red flags. I have been corresponding with the selling as of this morning and it's looking more and more like it's NOT stolen. But I just thought I'd bring it to the attention of more people here since someone may have recognized it. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -
Possible stolen rig? Maybe ... maybe not?
CanuckInUSA replied to CanuckInUSA's topic in Gear and Rigging
I think it's a bit over priced (there is no AAD). But the price is not the real question here. There is a lot of property crime here in my new adopted city and I'm just trying to make sure that the seller is on the level. I haven't been able to find any evidence that it is a stolen rig, so the seller my be legit. But I'm just trying to help my fellow skydivers here. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -
Crossfire2 canopies are awesome canopies and yes there is nothing wrong with jumping them at lighter wing loadings (even though they are intended to be jumped at higher wing loadings). But as others have said, this is not the right canopy for you right now grasshopper. Give it time, get many hundreds of more jumps under you belt and then come back and let's talk about the Crossfire2. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Possible stolen rig? Maybe ... maybe not?
CanuckInUSA replied to CanuckInUSA's topic in Gear and Rigging
This used rig may not be stolen. But I came across it in a place (vancouver craigslist classifieds website) where skydivers would not normally be looking for used gear and something told me to try and check out it's status. I can't find it on DZ.COM's stolen gear list, but this list can't be all that thorough. So does anyone recognize this gear as stolen gear? Speak now or forever hold your peace. Can you tell a computer nerd from a serial killer? Quiz!
CanuckInUSA replied to windcatcher's topic in The Bonfire
I got 5 of 10 and as the site said, not bad except that I might want to avoid a career in law enforcement or IT recruiting which is some good advise since I am an unemployed software developer (not having the easiest of time convincing potential employers that I still have the right stuff). Hmmm ... maybe next year my picture will be shown. Oh and one of those serial killers was easy to identify for those of us old enough to remember what he did in NYC in the 70s. Sept ... you should visit CO during the CPC Championships/GoFast Challenge and hopefully more pros will be showing up in 2006 as well (I believe a few of them might train in CO all summer long). Of course it's way to early to determine if I'll be there, but it sure was fun to have some of the best swoopers in the world competing at altitude for the first time this year. And look what it gaves us, a 678 foot distance record which is beatable under the right WX conditions. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

We should always put quality ahead of quantity. But I've always enjoyed jumping a lot because I love being in the air. Plus as I try to refine my skydiving and swooping skills, it helps to get back in the skies ASAP to correct what you may have done wrong on that last jump or to repeat what you did well on the jump. Of course you need to recognize what went wrong before you can correct it and that's where coaching comes in. Oh and in my new adopted city of Vancouver, you should see the crack heads and petty property crime they bring to the city. Sometimes I question what country I'm in. I felt safer in suburban Denver than I do here in the city of Vancouver. So what does this have to do with skydiving? Hmmm ... crack heads versus skydivers I guess. We're both troubled souls. I'm thinking that I'll be on the noodle diet before you know it if I don't find work within the next few months. I really want to go to Eloy this x-mas but I know that will cost me another 1k which is there in the bank account but not spending the $$$ could sustain me for an extra month of unemployment. Ah shit, I'll likely be at Eloy anyway. I can always draw on some resources from my home equity line of credit and I have plenty of extra skydiving gear which I can sell once my new JVX arrives in town (a spare rig, two velocity canopies, a Samurai canopy, Spectre canopy and a wingsuit). Plus while it's horrible to think this way, do I really need two BASE jumping rigs and a motorcycle. I've got plenty of things I can sell before I'm on the streets with my crack head buddies. Skydiving has been a blessing and a curse to this camper. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

LOL ... and we know you're well on your way to mastering this skill. COP: "What are you doing here?" ABBY: "I'm just taking pictures of this building" COP: "You're not part of Al Queda are you?" The thing is, is that you won't be jumping with the 1-800-SKY-RIDE people. You'll be jumping with the good people of Skydive San Diego. It's just too bad that you didn't know that all you needed to do was contact them (Skydive San Diego) instead of going through the 1-800-SKY-RIDE blokes. How do I cancel my 1800 sky ride order?
CanuckInUSA replied to Lazycreation's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I agree with Kelpdiver here ... unless they are charging you an extra arm and a leg above the normal $160ish to $200ish for a tandem skydive (not counting video), then go enjoy your jump and report back to us on your experience. I assure you that your jump will be nothing like anything you've ever experienced before. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -
Canadian 80-Way: June 22-25, 2006 - Registration
CanuckInUSA replied to mdrejhon's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I'm not so sure I would want to be up there in the skies with 79 other people trying to kill me (just as I'm trying to kill them). Plus while I've got a decent amount of experience, I've done nothing close to doing 80 ways (I think my biggest was a 16 way several years ago in Eloy when I was fresh off the presses). But never say never huh? Contrary to what some think thanks to all those hop n' pops I did this summer concentrating on my swooping, I can freefall on my belly as well as in a sit and while I won't be invited on any VRW world record attempts anytime soon, I can also fall on my head. But I'm not so sure I want to be forking out 100 bucks right now for something I may not be interested in and may not be able to travel to Ontar-eee-air-eee-oh for. But never say never ... Try not to worry about the things you have no control over -
Pilots pre-flight their aircraft before they take to the skies. Skydivers and BASE jumpers often but not always do gear checks. If you're into wingsuit BASE, why should your wingsuit be any different when it comes to gear checks? Now if you've done a gear check prior to exiting and your wing blows up on you low to the ground causing you to go in, well hopefully your family and friends knew ahead of time why you did what you did. Never said this stuff of pushing the limits of human flight to be safe. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

Try English next time... You're being a little harsh here wouldn't you say. It's easy to make spelling and grammar mistakes especially when you're typing fast. Now if these posts were part of the work that an editor would do, then mistakes can not be tolerated. But this is not the place to criticize people for their spelling and grammar. Plus who's to say that this person's mother tongue is something other than "English". Yes we need to discourage people from using "1-800-sky-ride". But what's wrong with informing people who may not know better that there are better alternatives to this source (like what UntamedDog has done). Back to your regular scheduled programming of wasting people's time. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

By the way, WTF is going on in K-bec? I understand the PQ and Bloc are at it again. Their timing is impeccable. They slowed down when I left Canada in '97 and now there back at it now that I'm back. Of course in light of the corruption of the Federal Liberal government (and Ontario's insistence to only vote liberal no matter how corrupt the Feds are), I'm having a hard time arguing against them this time around. I feel like a foreigner in my own country. I guess that's what happens when you leave a place for 8 years. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
