3 pointsLet us hope not. As awful and odious as he is he is also a former American President under Secret Service protection. We must hope that he can be protected from harm.

2 pointsUntil one of the major crypto CEOs (or whatever they're called) gave Trump a lot of money. Then Trump changed his tune on crypto.

2 pointsNot sure it is a population issue. I think any democracy is doomed when the spread between the have and have nots gets too big.

1 pointI don't think that is lost at all, I think it is very strong. But the communities have split and each is convinced only their community has the right answers.....very much like a religion.

1 pointAND when money confers political power. The combination of those two things are what neuters democracies.

1 pointThere was a time when a Republican said: "A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you're talking real money." Never would have thought we now have to remind Republicans that a Muslim here, an immigrant there, you know they are real people right?

1 pointYes, and it's a real no brainer. We do not need, and should never want, our political leaders past or present being assassinated. We absolutely should want them held accountable for crimes committed but never slain extrajudicially. Things are bad enough as they are.

1 pointBarracks Lawyer? No sir. I am not arguing "the finer points of the law", nor am I arguing the safety factors of various scenarios. I am simply clarifying the FAR for others' benefit. I am stating the actual FAR. Nothing more, nothing less. To be absolutely clear, there is NO REQUIREMENT for occupants to use oxygen. The regulation only addresses the requirement to PROVIDE oxygen. There is a lot of misunderstanding in this area, so it's important to get it right. FAR 91.211 reads.... § 91.211 Supplemental oxygen. (a) General. No person may operate a civil aircraft of U.S. registry— (1) At cabin pressure altitudes above 12,500 feet (MSL) up to and including 14,000 feet (MSL) unless the required minimum flight crew is provided with and uses supplemental oxygen for that part of the flight at those altitudes that is of more than 30 minutes dura- tion; (2) At cabin pressure altitudes above 14,000 feet (MSL) unless the required minimum flight crew is provided with and uses supplemental oxygen during the entire flight time at those alti- tudes; and (3) At cabin pressure altitudes above 15,000 feet (MSL) unless each occupant of the aircraft is provided with supple- mental oxygen.

1 pointEspecially when, within 10 minutes of the incident, he's back golfing AND sending out mass media communications asking for donations. Like nothing happened. Again. Strangest assassination attempt events ever. Almost like nothing happened.

1 pointI don't know about that. Typically, when the cult leader dies, the cult dies along with it. The same thing with a dictatorship. Unless there's a clear successor*, who can mesmerize the fools as well as the original leader, it usually ends up in infighting and chaos. Watching Vance try to take over the MAGA movement would be hilarious. As is typical with dictators (both actual and 'wannabe') Trumpty Dumpty has made sure that anyone actually capable of leading doesn't stay around. *Two notable exceptions are DPRK (North Korea) and the old Soviet Union. Kim Il Sung made sure his son would take over, and subsequent sons have done the same. It's a 'family dynasty' very similar to medieval Europe. In the old Soviet Union, there were often a few different individuals who were capable of leading. And sometimes a few who thought they were, but the Politburo didn't agree. Because the secondary leaders wanted to stay in power, they made sure there was a reasonably smooth transfer of power when the leader died.

1 pointHow many people died on his watch due to his stupidity and ignorance when the pandemic was in full flow? He richly deserves any harm that comes his way. More so than any other person on the planet.

1 pointKilling the Iran nuclear deal was one of Trump's biggest failures "IAEA, the United Nations watchdog, said Iran’s nuclear-fuel levels rose between June and August, enough to fuel a handful of warheads should Iran make a political decision to pursue weapons." Russia sharing nuclear secrets with Iran fuels U.S.-U.K. worries in exchange for the recent shipments of ballistic missiles from Iran to Russia to be used in Ukraine. The above is just another example of Trump's stupidity that has effected the whole world. So: as a clear and present danger to the entire planet. Are you sure about that?

1 pointHi Winsor, While I agree that this country could do better when it comes to the national debt; I find your rantings strange. Re: If, for reasons any good novelist could generate, the US Dollar was no longer accepted outside the US, things could get interesting. That is one big IF. Even when Nixon took us off of the gold standard, that good old US $20 bill was taken with little concern. I've travelled a fair amount in North America, South America, Europe & Asia. I have never had any problem with my US currency. Our economy is sound. It could be better. That alone is why IMO you are talking about one big IF. Or, maybe you are talking about a novelist who only writes fiction. We could be better; but, we are not the Gloom & Doom you seem to like to write about. Jerry Baumchen

1 pointyou keep using the word 'disastrous' without providing anything to support such strong language. fer fuck's sake, GWB took us into two wars based on fucking lies, killed a million civilians and thousands of americans in those wars, which went on for 20+ years and cost us well over $10T. you survived that and you and the country are still here, functioning. I am pretty sure that your morning this morning was the same pretty much as every morning you have had in the past 3 decades. cry wolf..... if our choices today are 'disastrous', then I expect and ask for some examples that are at least on par with the war crimes of GWB.....

1 pointFor the New York felonies and a first time offender it is usually community service or probation I believe. Now if Merchaun has a sense of humour he would sentence Trump to N number of hours community service working with wounded veterans or some other altruistic cause that deliberately offends Trumps sensibilities. It would be fun to see the GOP and Trump screaming bloody murder that a 34 hour (an hour per felony) community service is an outrage, while exposing their hypocrisy. Trump refusing to work in a soup kitchen against a backdrop of “I can’t buy bacon” in his rallies.
