At some point, someone is going to figure out a way to place a solar array on top of an EV. That combined with some type of generator from the wheels and have some form of power bank in the trunk that gives one very extended mileage. Kind of an Anker 767 for EVs thing.

Possibly cheaper, if not easier, would be to train some people to not go to Vegas when it's 108 and Baker at 114.

Hi Keith, Here is Jeep's version; not exactly what you asked about, but close. Jerry Baumchen

That's no problem. The new Prius Prime has one of those. Problem is that you don't add much even if you take up much of the car; the 185 watt panel on the Prius adds about 6 miles of range a day. The Lightyear looks good but I'll believe those range numbers when I see them. Cars just don't have that much surface area. BTW Aptera tried to do something similar, but they are dead in the water now. I also saw a GoFundMe for a "deployable" solar power system that would extend from a roof rack thing and cover the windshield and the back of the car. That, of course, only works when you are parked, and you may lose more range from the big roof rack thing than you get back from the solar charger. That, unfortunately, doesn't work. The Laws of Thermodynamics say that you can't get more energy out of the wheel than you put into it, so at best you break even.

I just took the train down to Washington DC and back a couple of weeks ago; easy peasy. We do that to NYC too Wendy P.

Above is a Lightyear EV. The hood roof and rear hatch are all solar cells, about 54 sq. ft. with a .19 drag coefficient. The company went broke and was refloated with the objective a a $40k euro model to replace the $240k original model above. The solar cells recharge 43.5 miles a day in optimum conditions and 388 miles fully charged. So if your commute is less than that you don't have to plug it in at all. Motor trend article. Company Website. The company recently cancelled plans for the model 2 $40k replacement. So perhaps in the future some other company may take up the project again.

I met Laddie in the late 70s when we both worked at an electrical control panel shop in Pomona CA. He was a force, his stories were what prompted me to go out to Perris and learn to skydive. I remember him telling me that he still jumped a PC because his back couldn't take the opening impact of a square as he had broken it in a hard landing celebrating his 500th jump by opening at 500 feet. He was a stellar human and I wish i had known him better. RIP to a fellow son of the Czech Republic. It was an honor to know him.

The US stock markets went up 17% under Trump. This was after his massive tax cuts for corporations. Under Biden stocks are up 40% and corporations want less regulation. I'll paraphrase Brent, "greed is good".

Seen elsewhere: Unregulated heavy industry got us the fire on the Cuyahoga River. Unregulated chemical companies got us Love Canal & Bophal India. Unregulated banking and financial companies got us the 'mortgage meltdown' of 2008. Unregulated aerospace companies produced the Boeing 737,

Thanks; I’m pretty sure it’s the same jump I was on. I’ll go check my copy. One pecker hanging out at 6:00, right? Wendy P.

Except he asked DOJ for their opinion prior to order and was told otherwise.... You mean the one where she said it was entirely consensual. Please do outline the illegality. As usual your comparisons don't support your position.

You are proving my point. You don't care if what Trump says is true or not, you just care how it makes you feel. Other than inflation, which almost the entire world is dealing with (in other words the President isn't going to change it) your economy is doing very well.

My final destination is my old home town, Phoenix, and of course Eloy. The Spaceland DZs are convenient along the way. If weather sucks, I won't be stopping at all.
  18. 1 point
Both Spaceland DZs are good candidates for a Christmas break road trip stop, which would you choose? Is there another option I should consider nearby?
  19. 1 point
Consider what you'll do if the weather sucks; I know there's stuff to do around the Houston Spaceland, but it's been 15 years or so since I was at the Dallas one (pre-Spaceland), and there was less around there. However, if you're looking for an on-DZ party scene, go to Eloy. Otherwise, personally, I'd choose Houston, but only because I used to live there. Wendy P.

I just renewed my membership for the 43rd time. Damn, i should have bought a lifetime membership in 81!!!!!!!!!! I see that USPA is no longer shipping the membership card holder with the membership card, see photo. Disappointing. It was a good place to store my card in the gear bag. Oh well, the old one is tyvec, so it should last as long as I do??????????????????

Hate to say it, but actual cards are on the way out. Everyone does the 'electronic' version.
