2 pointsAl Jaffee has died at 102. He was the cartoonist who created Mad Magazine's "Fold In" back cover. And a lot of other stuff in Mad. RIP Al, thanks for ALL the laughs. And there were a LOT of them. https://apnews.com/article/al-jafee-mad-magazine-cartoonist-dies-f676fbeb190b44c8aa4abcb0daa5d571

2 pointsWell, the answer is 42. What that answer actually means is entirely dependent on the question. However, understanding both the question and the answer at the same time is impossible. I have in my pocket, a device that allows me to contact the majority of the people on the planet and to access almost the entire knowledge of mankind... I use it primarily to argue with strangers and look at cute pictures of cats. (Note: This is not my quote. But it sure fits)

2 pointsWell, I must admit I had no real idea where the Azores are. So I spent 45 minutes reading about them and their history. On the internet. It's all there you just have to have the curiosity to look.

1 pointYa, buddy, with the New XM5 Assault Rifle and the new XM157 Fire Control System you'll be able to shoot around any pesky farmers and right into that prairie dog with every shot! Just imagine, sport fans, you'll be able to responsibly exercise your second amendment rights from the safety of a tall building over one-half mile away. What could possibly go wrong?

1 pointKind of like the thin blue line, only red. “I can understand why my guy thought/said/did that,” but someone they don’t identify with? It’s WRONG and must be punished. Wendy P.

1 pointNot at all. I remember rec.skydiving back around that time. Waco was a symbol of government overreach, a group of confused kids and religious leaders who might have misbehaved a bit - but whose REAL crime was to oppose Bill Clinton's gestapo tactics, carried out by his lieutenant Janet Reno. They, not any Branch Davidians, were 100% responsible for all the tragedy that happened there. This was true of politics in general as well. Robert Rubin claimed that Reno carried 100% of the "ultimate responsibility for the disastrous assault and its resulting deaths." Cato Institute: "the children died because of willful and knowing actions by our federal law enforcement professionals." Alex Jones has referred several times to the "Waco Holocaust," making the comparison to the innocent Jews that were killed by Hitler. More recently, Roger Stone dedicated his book, "Clintons' War on Women" to the heroic Branch Davidians who died at Waco. And today Trump is capitalizing on it as well. He held his latest rally in Waco during the 30th anniversary of the standoff, attempting to capitalize on republican support for the Branch Davidians. A Trump supporter at the rally: "Waco was an overreach of the government, and today the New York district attorney is practicing an overreach of the government again" - thus connecting their hero Trump to the brave men and women of the Branch Davidians, also unfairly persecuted by the government. So yes, many republicans loved the Branch Davidians. I have no doubt they had no feelings for them before Waco. But afterwards the victims were bloody shirts they could wave, and wave them they did. And over time they grew from criminals and pedophiles to something more noble. And today people like Roger Stone apparently feel they are far more heroic than criminal. And Roger Stone certainly does not represent all republicans - but Trump, by definition, once did. And wants to again.

Justin Jones to office Black lawmaker who was expelled reinstated to Tennessee seat (msn.com) How sweet it is. Jerry Baumchen

1 pointWhile I don't have an issue with conservatism in general, I am truly surprised that any thinking person could support the GOP in 2023. IMO the GOP took a decidedly nasty turn with Gingrich and has been on a downhill track since then, accelerating rapidly post 2016 with its embrace of anti-science, authoritarianism and the loony far right (MTG, for example).

1 pointLet me just get this straightened out once and for all. Both you and Joe (W) can take your flag waving indignation about foreigners daring to criticize your glorious nation and well.......express it all you want, I will mostly ignore as the distraction that it is. This is an international forum and just like America you can love it or leave it. I hope that is a decorous enough statement for you. I am not American, that does not mean I don't like America and it certainly doesn't mean I am not allowed to find fault in what is going on in America. You may have noticed there has been quite a shit show going on there for a few years now. So has the rest of the world. Yes, you are still better than Russia, China, and a whole bunch of shithole countries as well. But as long as you hold the world's reserve currency and enough weapons to change the population of the planet in a few hours, and dominate the English language news cycle we are all going to notice you and gossip about you as well. If you don't want the neighbours talking about you close the blinds while you are having your family fight. And try to keep the bullets contained within your own walls while you are at it. If you want to talk about the plight of Canadian First Nations people I am more than willing. After all I live in Winnipeg and it has close to the highest population percentage of native people in the country. My daughter in law is a treaty card holder. I am familiar with the issues and you are correct in thinking that they have some close parallels with oppressed groups in your country.

1 pointYou'd think so. But from the posts in these forums we all know how the gun nuts think. Guns, specifically AR-15s are necessary to own because Washington doesn't work. Washington is the source of all our problems. Every red-neck American must be armed to the teeth with lots of 5.56 in storage. Because Libs and Washington are the enemy.Every day that message gets delivered to the gun loving base. The costs of smoking in many countries are pictured on the front of each cigarette package. Perhaps its time to put the costs of guns on the stocks of guns and boxes of ammunition. Together with the picture of the child who suffered that injury.
