No, I don't. Of course, for everyone except the most brainwashed conservatives, that's not the point. There is a real conversation to be had about immigration, border control, asylum and even giving citizenship to birth tourists. (BTW, that's what my wealthy Venezuelan friends do) Sadly, that conversation is impossible to have with folks that have blindered and filtered world views.

That's different. Sometimes we need immigrants to do the jobs no Americans will do, e.g. sleeping with Trump.
  3. 2 points
Exactly. That's the issue. I don't think anyone on either side of the aisle here doesn't think we should take a more methodical approach to the problem. The states, the federal government, both sides of the aisle, should work together and implement a new "Ellis Island" approach rather than the playing of hot potato for years. IMO: We should convert a BRAC base to a port of entry. Ship everyone there for vetting, skills assessment, legal assistance, etc. Compile a list of states and the numbers they can accept, Transfer them to those states with a hand-off to HHS for long-term pathways. But, that's just one man's opinion.

Where do you place asylum seekers in there? It is a valid request according to US law. Wendy P.

I’m pretty sure Obama can spell. How else would he have faked his birth certificate?

Right, I suppose when people are already frightened and helpless it’s ok to lie to them for a political stunt that emphasise their helplessness. Kinda like kicking homeless people for fun. They were already at rock bottom, now they’re at rock bottom with bruised ribs, so really what’s the difference?

interesting first / only post. I think you need counting lessons these 23 Pegasi have SEVEN cells each. I think I'm #14. Circa early 90's?????????????????

As an immigrant, I resent that accusation!

Hi folks, Re: GOP governors put focus on migrants with Martha's Vineyard transport - POLITICO It would seem to me that since these migrants quite possibly did not choose to be re-located, that would be considered kidnapping. And, since they were shipped over state lines, that would make it a federal offense. Maybe the DOJ should indict both Abbott & DeSantis. Jerry Baumchen

Hi John, Since they no longer have Roe v Wade, they have to look elsewhere. Jerry Baumchen

Hi Keith, IMO you have presented an excellent suggestion. So, how would you overcome this problem: The states, the federal government, both sides of the aisle, should work together IMO that is too big of a mountain to climb in today's environment. Jerry Baumchen

Russia is now rushing to push through a (ahem) referendum in the four Ukrainian regions it fully or partly controls about whether they want to become part of Russia. Spoiler alert: the results will say they will. On one hand, no one in the world will take it seriously - even Turkey have said it’s a sham. On the other hand there’s going to be a plan. Maybe they’ll try and conscript their new eligible ‘citizens’ though that seems like a bad idea. The worrying thing is what they could try and justify once ‘Russia’ is under attack.

Texas wanted to be on the border with Mexico and made no mention of a wall at the time. And now it's supposed to be my problem?

Facebook is filled with MAGA cult members who are only concerned that points were "scored". If these individuals were considered anything other than a political pawns then there would have been coordination with the government agencies and non-profits in the areas where they were dumped as part of the political stunt. I am all in favor for sending these individuals up to my area in a coordinated manner, if the individuals are fully informed and willing to make the move, and there is coordination ahead of time so services can be arranged. Not what happened here, not by a long shot.

Because first and foremost they are human beings, and they should be treated with dignity. How you treat individuals is a completely separate issue from the broader legal and political issues around immigration. If someone can't understand that then they are a huge fucking pile of garbage.

Here's one issue I've got with it. There's no indication that he said anything about "American/U.S. currency" to Flo. She just wrote down what he said, which was "$200,000 in cash", and walked it to the cockpit. So to go from "$200,000 in cash" to "American/U.S. currency" means that at some point Cooper must have turned to Tina and said something like "oh I forgot to mention that I want this money in circulated U.S. currency, call up to the cockpit and tell them that." Did that happen? Maybe. Maybe not. As an attorney I'm pretty good at arguing both sides of an argument. I could easily argue FlyJack's side on this as well. This isn't an opinion I'm married to. It just seems like an odd thing to say. Seems to me that there would be no need to specify the nationality of the currency unless you were asking for something different from the country you are in i.e. the scenario of a Cuban hijacking an American plane in American airspace and asking for pesos. It seems like an unnecessary qualifier for Cooper to make and to me almost sounds like Rat being ultra-specific. I think anyone who has seen Rat interviewed could see him doing that.

Fact is, the immigration laws are badly broken and don't serve either immigrants or employers well. Even GWB recognized this. However, every attempt to fix the problem is torpedoed by the far right for purely political advantage. The far right wants to have a problem to crow about.

It is claimed in the Reca tapes... Of course there is no evidence for any of the Reca narrative... in fact the evidence decimates the Reca narrative. It is a story made up by Carl Laurin feeding Walter Reca information, but Carl was a terrible researcher and got most of the facts wrong. We have wasted too much time already on the Reca scam.. Slim King is just a Reca shill... he can't even get the Reca story right.

You should read that political screed again if you found any reference to 4.4 million asylum seekers in Texas. Although it has a number of alarmist projections that seek to justify a wall on the border all of the numbers I could find refer to "contacts with illegal crossers on the SW border". Which is far bigger than even Texas. Like I said, in all of the world there were 4.6 million asylum seekers last year. I agree that there is a problem and has been for a long time, and that it seems likely to get worse as the world economy deteriorates in the near future. But spreading hyperbole is not going to help it.

Sure did. What's the difference? Ukrainian 'refugees' are fleeing to Europe, in fear for their lives. South and Central American 'asylum seekers' are fleeing their homes, in fear for their lives. In either case, they enter the country without prior authorization (visa), present themselves to the immigration authorities, fill out the paperwork and are allowed to stay LEGALLY.

Nope. You are wrong. From the US Citizenship and Immigration services website: The word 'permitted' means they have 'permission' to live here while their case is processed. https://www.uscis.gov/humanitarian/refugees-and-asylum/asylum What's the difference between an 'asylum seeker' and a 'refugee'? Its funny that you blame the government. Any time ANYONE proposes any sort of change to the immigration rules, the alt-right scream "AMNESTY" from the rooftops until the Rs torpedo it.

There’s a bit more to that story. Saturn’s moon titan was so worth a look that the decision was made to do a flyby with Voyager 1 and that meant that it could no longer continue on the same grand tour out to Uranus & Neptune as Voyager 2. In retrospect, I’m not sure it was worth it. Titan revealed few secrets on that flyby due to its thick, opaque atmosphere so Voyager 1 passed by and exited the solar system out of the top so to speak. Still, titan was definitely worth checking out and Cassini-Huygens did a good job with that a couple of decades later. Some JPL scientists worked on both missions and had to wait a long time to satisfy their curiosity.

And that's the issue. You are just brushing off the effect on the poor people who are in such a bad situation that they are seeking asylum. You appear to have not even a hint of compassion which is very easy for anyone if they do not have actual first hand experience with those. And then when anyone comments you again brush it off with a bullshit comment about "panties in a bunch". Relocating the refugees to other places in the country to spread the burden around is not wrong. Rounding them up and lying to them then arranging for them to be greeted by FOX at their dumping off point is very wrong.

Right? Like, if Biden is so popular why did he win by millions of votes and (what Trump himself defined as) an electoral college landslide? Oh wait, that kinda makes sense.

Ah the classic right wing playbook. “How dare you make such an outrageous accusation without proof?!” ”Here’s proof.” ”Whatever, it’s not important.”

The Murdoch family are liberals? That might be even dumber than thinking Obama invaded Afghanistan in 2001. Actually no, I think they’re just about tied.
