Oh yeah? What about Nerdgirl? Her resume is pretty impressive. She's also the only person I know who tailored her behavior based on how she would field questions at her Senate confirmation hearing. She wouldn't do 'trespassing' BASE jumps for that reason.

Anyone who still can't get their head around the very basic concept of privilege at this point just plain doesn't want to.

I can't even fathom the depth of pig-ignorance of someone who grew up in the south at the end of the Jim Crow era who claims he has no choice but to be a racist because those damn black folks were so unreasonably mean to him back then.

The temperatures and pressures they will operate at internally compared to either reciprocating or turbine engines will make seem to be maintenance free in comparison.

Regarding Mayor Pete -- I think he would do very well as a sub-cabinet officer in Housing and Urban Development. Maybe even something in the Congressional liaison office. He needs some federal-level experience to supplement his intelligence on a lot of issues. He's incredibly smart and has a talent for presenting a well-developed argument. But even here, the first thing people note is, "he's only been a mayor" as a disqualifying factor for much higher office (or cabinet post). Okay, so, let's put him to work somewhere in between so we can get the benefit of his intellect, and beef up his resume at the same time.

People will still get together the same as they did on Thanksgiving and Halloween. People are tired of dealing with the pandemic and feel the risk is worth the reward at this point. For some people their choice will be correct, but for others it will result in them greatly regretting their choices. To me, this shit is going to be done and over with soon enough. The vaccine is coming soon and once I get it it's a done deal for me. So there is no reason to risk getting sick now when I can see the finish line. But most people dont think that way, either because they dont want the vaccine or just dont care in the first place. This story has repeated itself over and over. Experts warn the public to take this shit seriously, they dont, then they end up in the ER wishing they had. It is the same thing over and over. It wont ever change. Sometimes the hard way is the only way.

Hi Joe, Re: 'Do you think knowing that a good case of Covid means the possibililty of a lifetime of ED will make the idiots take it seriously?' No, but if they cannot reproduce; well, that might just be a good thing. Jerry Baumchen

Dear mdrejhon, Aviation electric motors will not be maintenance free. The first batch will require inspections every day, week, year, 1,000 hours etc. As they prove trouble-free operation, 1,000 hour inspections will be extended to 1,500 ... 2,000 ...2,500 ...3,000, etc. ... similar to ETOPS. Transport Canada will be super-cautious about extending inspection intervals. Aviation quality control might have been the best back in 1945, when my grand-uncles returned from serving in the RCAF, but we have major improvements in automotive quality within my lifetime. Now we routinely see new automobiles run 4 years and 100,000 kilometres without maintenance. Cars can only run that long if they are built precisely. Manufacturers build modern cars precisely because they don't want to lose money on warranty repairs. For example: My friend only recently replaced the Toyota Prius (gasoline-electric hybrid) that he owned for 17 years. He replaced it with an all-electric Chevy Bolt. His wife still drives a middle-aged Prius. I am currently driving a 13 yeaar old Toyota Matrix, that I bought second-hand 9 years ago. Since then I have only replaced oil, spark plugs, windshield wipers and tires. It has driven 600,000 kilometres with plenty of remaining life. So I believe that electric airplanes can fly safely with only slightly-modified electric automobile components. With electric automobiles soon to be manufactured by the millions, economies of scale will soon drive down manufacturing costs.

For the MagniX electric caravan they flew this summer, what was the weight of that aircraft? Are they already using large-bandgap semiconductors? If not, does he think they will help increase efficiency? Are the batteries actively cooled? Can he share any details on their thermal runaway containment strategy?

I like to grab and peel red before swinging my eyes to look at silver. Then I keep my eyes on silver as I pull red. Toss red. # Put both hands on silver and pull silver to full arms' extension. Resume arch. Look over shoulder to confirm that reserve pilot-chute is leaving. Footnote# I teach students to toss red to confirm that they have pulled it to full arms' extension. The only difference with my personal gear is hanging onto red. With tandems, I just toss handles with gay abandon until I have a landable canopy overhead. The School can worry about replacement handles.

Well, despite the lower energy density, higher discharge rate is something LFP cells do better than lithium ions. In addition to having more cycles. For a jump aircraft yes it might take the clean sheets to actually fix this issue - the X-47 is going to test distributed electric propulsion for lowering the weight of the structure, reducing induced drag (wingtip vortices), while adhering to normal takeoff, landing, and stall speed requirements. For reducing weight, I'd even go so far that for a jump aircraft, the pilot doesn't need to be onboard the aircraft. The lift can be flown by AI, with a jump pilot on the ground in a DZ control room ready to take over if the AI needs assistance. Then, they won't need a bailout rig, you'll have room for one more revenue seat, but regulatory wise it could open a can of worms - I might start another topic on this if people are interested.
