shropshire 0 #1 May 20, 2009 Hi, I've just started flying wing suits (and loving it) but also fly Paragliders. The main instrument that I use when PGing is a Variometer, which not only gives me altitude but also Vertical Airspeed. I'm thinking, that maybe I can convert one of my old ones by recalibrating it so that in stead of VS differences based around 0 m.p.h +ve/-ve it gives me speeds centred around (say but adjustable) 70m.p.h. This centred speed (stready flight) could be adjusted as I improve. Once set, the device would give me audible signals (as it does now) if I slow down (happy signal) or speed up vertically (sad signal). Would this be a usefull training tool? (.)Y(.) notsane 0 #2 May 21, 2009 I don't see why not. I've been slowly working on a device that would provide a visual indication of speeds from 60 to 40mph using an tri-color LED. I've never seen a vario that could be re-centerd, though ...
sdctlc 0 #3 May 21, 2009 We were talking about this in Kamloops last weekend and one of the points of discussion was the Viso and the Speed Meter mode. According to the manual: ------------------------------------- Speed-Meter Mode When the VISO is set to Speed-Meter mode, the “ALTI”, “Feet/Meter”, “Mph/Kmh” and “TAS/SAS” icons are ON. Note: The VISO will display the altitude during climb and switch to Speed-Meter during the freefall and under canopy. Date/Time area switches OFF during the freefall and under canopy. Speed-Meter Display during the freefall Speed resolution is in 1 Mph (1 Kmh) increments. Important Notice about Speed Recordings: Experience has shown that when mounting the VISO on the hand or belly, different air pressures induced by hand or body movements may result in incorrect recordings of speeds. ------------------------------------- I did not get a chance to try it but I am planning on getting one and mounting it to my Ringsite to see if it is a viable alternative to making one. I am hoping to do this next weekend but we will see if I can get my hands on one before then... Scott C."He who Hesitates Shall Inherit the Earth!" shropshire 0 #4 May 21, 2009 It may be useful some time to attach 4 or 5 of the same devices to a flyer so the we can actually gain some imperical data about this 'difference' in pressures at different parts of the body during a flight... let's see how much difference ther actuall is and then where best to locat the pressure sensors in the future.
