Megatron 0 #1 December 9, 2008 Im sure most of you know that West Tennessee Skydiving offers recreational HALO jumps from 30,000ft! Assuming you pull a little high at 5000ft that's about 1.5min of freefall! Still questionable if its worth the $350 price tag...as a novelty maybe. But how cool would it be to wingsuit from 30k...assuming a 40mph vertical speed and pulling at 5k, that adds up to over a 7 minute freefall!!!! SWEET ..and totally worth the price in my opinion. I dont have enough jump to fly a wingsuit yet but I should by the spring and once I get about 50 or so wingsuit jumps under my belt Im there! ..whos with me? ..this means you Dale! keithbar 1 #2 December 9, 2008 so does anyone know how long a bailout bottle lasts? I know it would depend on how hard you were breathing but. assuming a rapid resp. rate can you suck one of those dry in a minute or two? or are you allways gonna have 20 minutes or more of air in one of those?i have on occasion been accused of pulling low . My response. Naw I wasn't low I'm just such a big guy I look closer than I really am .
Costyn 1 #3 December 9, 2008 Quote But how cool would it be to wingsuit from 30k...assuming a 40mph vertical speed Yea sounds cool, but in practice there's no way you're going to be able to maintain a 40mph fall-rate for 7 minutes. It's just too much strain on your muscles and you are going to get tired after about 3 minutes max. If you relax and do maybe an 60 to 70 fall rate, you might be able to maintain it throughout the flight. But damn, 30k, that's serious business... thats the altitude commercial jet-liners fly at. Its usually -40 degrees (both Fahrenheit and Celcius - thats where they match up) up there. I wonder if you can fit enough clothes under your regular wingsuit to keep out the cold. Calling Scott Campos... you've done this stuff before, let us know the details! Zeemax 0 #4 December 9, 2008 Seriously, just having the required number of jumps to wingsuit, then only doing 50 before wanting to jump one on a HALO is not the greatest idea in the world HALO jumps are fun, i did one at the WFFC a few years back from 31K, although it was a little bit chilly up there. The instructor wrote the outside temp in the ice INSIDE the plane... -58. Brrrrrr! As others have said, unless you were He-man, you're not going to sustain 40mph from 30K. It has been done though, aside from the countless military tests that Scott Campos has done to keep us safe from baddies , by a UK jumper - Adrian Nicholas when he set the record for the longest time in free fall. I can't remember the exact time, but it was over 4 minutes something. He did it for Partick Phoenix Fly - High performance wingsuits for skydiving and BASE Performance Designs - Simply brilliant canopies
pierre3636 0 #5 December 9, 2008 im almost thinking that with modern suits with airlocks the strain factor would be considerably less than before when we didnt have airlocks. cool thread! ~ time is ~ time was ~ times past ~
LouDiamond 1 #6 December 9, 2008 Quote Still questionable if its worth the $350 price tag... IMO, no. But I do it multiple times every month so I don't find it as appealing as some may. I cover jumping from high altitudes in my book, skyflying, wingsuits in motion and address the concerns associated with it and there are several. While it is a lot of fun, there are somethings that people should know about when jumping from high altitudes because its not a normal skydive and there are some very real potential dangers associated with it. While many people have made high altitude wingsuit jumps already, I have only seen two civilian skydiving operations actually take the needed precautions and provide the right equipment and most importantly, have the jumpers prebreath. Both of those operations charge around the above quoted price and I fully understand why;there is a considerable cost involved in equipment alone. However, if you want to read up more about this topic, we have discussed it over the years here and several threads can be found here. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.
