skymedic 0 #1 November 6, 2003 Now I know it's been on here...and eather I don't know how to search correctly or just having a bit of operator error...BUT...here's my ?. I have recently installed some piping in our closet to get our rigs up off the ground. Fallinwomans is installed just above mine. This has really helped clean up this closet from hell. now I dont see any problems with it....but maybe I'm not looking at it in all the ways possible. anyone see any issues with this storage/closet from hell taming method? skymedic 0 #4 November 6, 2003 I can't post a pic as I dont have a digi cam....all I can say is it is 1 1/2 inche steel plumbers pipe. cleaned off real good. and attached the the wall with a 1x4. it's the same set up they have at the DZ. hence the reason I used it. I just didn't know how it is on rigs that STAY there...althought I know sever DZ's that use this method to store there student/instructor gear. marc Marc otherwise known as Mr.Fallinwoman.... rigging65 0 #5 November 6, 2003 If you're worried about the metal on fabric (which I could understand as a concern), wrap the pipe with cloth so it keeps the Nylon out of contact with the metal. Or slip a PVC sleeve over the metal. Also, a pipe with a wider diameter is better than one with a smaller diameter...helps keep the shoulder areas from deforming. Of more concern, closets are generally a good place to store gear...as long as it doesn't house, say, a heater, water pipes, etc.. Just make sure it's climate controlled and you should be good! JohnRich 4 #6 November 6, 2003 Those kind of rig-holders are common at a lot of DZ's. The thing I worry about is sharp burrs on the cut end of the pipe. Some people put rubber or plastic covers over the ends, or just gring them down round and smooth. I also worry about them rusting, and then the rust getting squished into the fabric of webbing. In an air-conditioned house, that shouldn't be a problem. If you use PVC or galvanized pipe, it's not an issue.
skymedic 0 #7 November 6, 2003 yep...already thought about the climate control issues..that is good to go...good temp right in the middle of the house...we no water lines behind it. thing I was the most worried about was deformation. I put plastic caps on the end of the pipes to protect the rigs in that way. made sure they were cleaned of any grease. but I might just go out and get a PVC cover pipe...or maybe some tape...but then I worry about goo coming off the tape...through the other side. I was thinking maybe some hockey tape...not friction tape but the other stuff. Marc otherwise known as Mr.Fallinwoman....
councilman24 37 #8 November 6, 2003 I'd think about painting it to keep the sweety harness from rusting the pipe. Only real concern. I'm assuming your hanging them from the harness at the shoulders. The USAF Academy has over 400 rigs stored this way. About 10 year old Talons. Stop worrying.I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
Dumpster 0 #9 November 7, 2003 If the rigs will be there long-term, pull the pilot chutes out of the BOC pouches - Keeps the elastic in the Spandex happy and stretchy, as it won't want to remain stretched out- Easy Does It

You can buy some foam pipe insulation covers at your local hardware store for just a few bucks. Old torn up T-shirts would work too.
