The Chief of Staff Southern Naval Command, RAdm Sunil Lanba, undertook a Tandem Assisted Free Fall (TAFF) jump over the Wellington Island on 04 Jun 08 as also a Tandem Formation sky dive during the 45 second free fall to the base altitude of 5000 Ft prior the deployment of the big Tandem Canopy. This is a National record of unique nature. The dive becomes unique as it is carried out from over a small island over highly populated areas and surrounded by treacherous channels, with very strong currents. 2. To add to this feat, Lt Cdr MV Birajdar, the training officer of Indian Navy Skydiving Training Team (INSDTT) became the first Indian Birdman. He flew the entire length of the Mattan Cherry Channel before landing his parachute in INS Garuda on 05 Jun 08. Indian Navy becomes the 2nd Armed Forces team to Fly Naval Crest in the skies in the Birdman suit other than the popular Golden Knights Parachuting team of United States of America. 3. Navy conducted a basic course (26 May – 07 Jun 08) in most difficult (tight) Drop Zone of the Country, which in the past was adjudged unsafe for conduct of basic skydiving course in any format. 29 volunteers including 22 Naval cadets earned the coveted parachute wing. 4. Wellington Island where the camp was conducted, is a small man made island with channels on either side with powerful currents. INSDTT is the only one of its kind which trains in the most contemporary and safe Accelerated Free Fall (AFF) method and Tandem Assisted Free Fall (TAFF) method of skydiving instruction. The Admiral mentioned that this extreme sport should be extended and made available to any one who can under take it. If you look up all the skydiving records here and everywhere online, I think you'll find about a hundred or more. And I think if you look at all those records, 99% of them are record CLAIMS. Just records set to rules and definitions the recordholders created themselves for the purpoise of media exposure.. If you want to fly your wingsuit over the pentagon/white house/channel/gulf of mexico and calling it a 'world record' gets it done with permits and payd for by the TV people, and its gets you mentions in the media that you can use for your next sponsored jump or project...wanna bet your ass its also you calling your jump a record when the newspaper asksI know I would..JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete? B-If it gets him funding (even if everyone has done it) it's a record. C-the media may have made that up for him. That recently happened to me. Reporter put worms in my mouth.
