Mercury leg wings

Recommended Posts

ok, too early to say for sure but I made a cool change on a proto that was rather nice,

let me tell you a story..............on a proto I made a month ago, I put the leg wing to the toes and about 5" beyond thinking when you point your toes it's gonna be great, so using my narrowest leg just by moving the wing up to the toes [and beyond] it made em just as wide as the Mk 1, they came out enormous, so I made the arm wing "enormous" to match the legs, I took the Mk 1 length and then out 8" from the thigh, at a right angle to the bod and up to the handle's,
so I jumped this "thing" and I hated it, I was all over the place, so I sent it to Jeff, [he's still on the rd] and he jumped it and said the same, but where I pulled high and said fook that, he jumped it 5 times and thought it the fastest thing but still "squirley" ... couldn't keep a heading,

so, says I, if moving the leg wing forward is no good, lets move it back to the heels............. So at the Richmond boogie last weekend I got to jump the first proto like this and loved it, sweet, but the legs had more lift and my head would drop if I relaxed the arm's just one bit, huh, just because my feet were sticking out the front of the wing.............. I see em as stabilizers maybe channeling the air???
so, I made a proto with the arm wings like the squirley suit and with the heel wing and jumped it today and Brilliant, loved it, smooth like Ive never felt before,

Im gonna go jump em, ( I have 3 different ones) in Europe next week for 18 days, diff comps, and I expect to win :-) [if I dont im gonna look so stupid] but i am a little fat guy, we'll see, maybe Im wrong, tomorrow im converting the original "squirley" to the heels and send that back to Jeff, see what he thinks, but I'm jazzed, I feel at this mo that I wanna make em standard, the Mercury wing :-) we'll see

It sounds like the same legwing we had on the prototype Blades we jumped in Spain. The only problem we had with the legwing of the back was that it was a it harder to put on the power when you really wanted to fly it hard.

You had to almost overstretch your legs to get the legwing to form a straight wing. And even then the end of the legwing would always point upward a little, bleeding air out of the back. Which is why we suggested changing that.

But the legs hanging beneath the wing did definately make it the most stable suit we've flown in a long time..

Real curious to see more R&D in that department..

The basic effect is known from airplanes. High wing planes have higher stability (compared to low wing with similar design) as the center of gravity sits below the wing. That gives a tendency for stbilizing itself. Of course there are many other factors as well, but it seems to apply for WS as well. Even it is only the leg wing.

Anyhow interesting to see where it goes...

folding wasnt the issue...

Just when you look at a wing starting at the crotch, and sewn from there to the back of the legs, this puts the legwing at a slight upward angle..

Unless you're going for a wing attached to the back of the leg, but to heels.
Kinda like the GS1 had.

sorry I misread, yes I see the point but seems to me the air will "spill/shoot" out better with the wing at that angle,
but as I said, bottom line, it feels like it's pushing me more so Im RIGHT INTO IT:)

Glad that you are experimenting Tony :)
Attaching the wing like the 'Mercury Wing' is causing the leg wing to be at a reduced angle of attack compared to most prior designs. The Phantom and the Rigor Mortis have the leg wing attached half way between the toes and the heel.

Gliders at a reduced angle of attack fly faster. Do they glide better? That answer is not simple. Only testing will tell.

I would love to fly a suit that has this Mercury leg wing and smaller armwings(with smooth leading edges, please) that are also attached in the same manner. Speed baby...speed.

Kris.

I have been jumpin with jeff while he has been trying this suit. It definately has a lot of range. I think it just needs a little tuning. more to come.

"This suit" has just been converted to Mercury [rising]

now we're gonna see some shit, Im gonna go jump it before I send it to Jeff, hey Heff where are you? I need an address

I have 6 total, 3 sm1's in diff size's and 3 mercury sm1's, in my size, but putting the bootie to the front makes it way easier to fit,
I just clock'd one with my new Altitrack, 31 mph best vertical speed, I was racing around clouds so av was 47 or so, cant work the instrument properly yet

Mike im taking them to Europe Sunday mid day so come out sat & sunday morn ok?

Awesome... have a great time over there and come back with some good stories. (Like always. ;))

I'm headed to the islands tomorrow bright and early - won't be back till late Wednesday so I guess I'll have to give one of those Mercury's a try when you return.

Safe travels friend - see you soon. B|
