Altimeter “use by date”?

Recommended Posts

Sitting in the plane yesterday I was watching my alti and came to think about that it is probably 25-30 years old (I bought it second hand around 1980).

This leads to my question, is there any “use by date” for an altimeter? Or can they last for ever? Anybody know? Mine is working just fine.

My original Altimaster II was used for 22 years before I screwed it up. I unscrewed the lens to replace a scratched one, and knocked the needle off the post. This was an unrepairable problem they told me. That thing had been knocked around, under water, dragged, and put through 3,000 jumps or so. It would still be going strong if I hadn't been clumsy.

That is so cool that someone else knocked the needle off that way, I did it on my first Alti, Had it for about 2 hours. anybody else? I was feeling like I was the only one in the world that had done this.
take care,

I have popped the needle off several to get the face plate off. Replaced the face plate with a new one and put the needle back on. No problem.
