For discussion - definition of a complete wingsuit formation

Recommended Posts

2006 saw some of the biggest, tightest formations flown to date :)
Whilst it is important not to lose sight of why we fly I think there is value in agreeing on a definition for what a complete formation is..

I believe Jari was the first to be quoted as saying:

"Everyone in their pre-determined slot, within one body length of the correct position and held for 4 seconds"

What do people think of this definition?

I know Scott C has done some work in this area. I think if we start to publish photos and video of pre-determined, slot perfect, complete big way formations it will really boost the profile of wingsuit flying and also the opinion that the skydiving public have of us...

"men (and sometimes women) in skirts who zoom around the sky.... ;)"

If we can agree on a definition then we could use it for this years Z-Flock 3, Stupino 2007 and Cochstedt 2007 events?? :)
Has their ever been a 20 way + formation, complete slot perfect? (meeting the criteria above?)

I dont think it would have to be a pre-determined slot (although it would make the dive-plan a lot cleaner and tighter in the way people approach slots)

And one body length, could also be equal distances throughout the formation.
It could be two body lengths, and on photo, it would still be perfect, as long as everybody flies this same distance...formationwise, it would still look incredible, and come across as a complete formation..

I cant wait for all the events of this coming year...!

IMO, I find the formation shape is more essential then having the formation be slot perfect. I try to set up a secondary slot should another flocker get to the formation before the person they are set up behind. They can only move to the slot that is straight forward of them, should it be unfilled. Then I'll give the less experienced flocker a chance to fly the forward slots and not have to trail behind. If it's slot perfect and they get taken out on exit, ending up far below the formation, they can still sometimes recover and set up in their correct line or secondary slot.
There's many ways to build a formation, sometimes waiting on someone to fill their exact slot leaves an odd shape, or picture, for the flyers to visualize when the formations are larger then say 8-10.

Colds suck......
