Cypres question???

Recommended Posts

I read on here that a cypress would cost me about 800 (new) First I don't know wheather to get a 1 pin or 2 pin (if there is a 2 pin) what is the difference? I was just quoted $1200 for a cpyres 2 expert 1pin! Is this normal? Am I looking at the wrong kind or something?

There are two versions of the Cypres. The original Cypres is no longer being produced by the manufacturer, Airtec. Some dealers may have "new" units still available; call around. I don't know what they'll charge for them.

The Cypres2 is the new one. Expect to pay $1200-$1300 depending on what the Euro is doing against the dollar.

One pin or two pin is determined by the number of pins on your reserve ripcord. AFAIK, the only US built rig that uses 2 pins is the Racer; all other US built containers have 1 pin closing the reserve container.

Both the original Cypres and the Cypres2 have a 12 year service life. If you'll be buying used, check the manufacture date.

Lots of info on both can be found here.

There are two kinds of pop top reserve systems. 1 pin and 2 pin. If you have a 1 pin reserve, you need a 1 pin cypres, if you have a 2 pin reserve, you need a 2 pin cypres.

If you get hold of the wrong one second hand it can be modified fairly cheeply. the only difference is that 1 has 1 cutter, the other has 2 wired up to the same control unit.

Most containers are 1 pin. 2 pin reserves are not safety "fashionable".

If your reserve has a one-pin, you buy the one pin Cypres. Two pins, you buy the two pin Cypres.

Cost: shop around. The Cypres I (not one pin, but model number) should run about $8-900. THe Cypres Model II (newest one and is water resistant, has some maintenance updates, etc.) is around $1100-1200.

Ask your Instructors the difference between the Cypres I & II. ANd don't confuse the model with the number of reserve pins.

Hope that helps.

didnt say they're not good. just some of the manufacturors who used to make em have stopped and switched to making 1 pin.

dont know if there actually is a safety issue with them, just that they are percieved by some to have a very marginal safety issue. Some consider them to be simply adding something that can go wrong. some consider that if 1 pin works fine, why put in a second - that simply doubles the risk of having a problem with it.

As I said, not my opinion, but if there are enough people who think like that, the rig will not sell as well, so the design feature gets dropped.

hence "safety fashionable". Not saying its not safe, or even that it is less safe, just that its not fashionable.

Blake,

Hey bud it's Clint. $1200 is a little high for a Cypres, even if it is a Cypres 2. I got my Cypres 1 for a damn good price, like $850.00 brand new. You need to look around a little more. Talk to some dealers. Just because it says $1225.00 in Para Gear doesn't mean it is $1225.00 everywhere.

By the way, screw the big screen or anything else you would buy instead of a Cypres. I would rather have my life then a damn TV.
