VectorBoy 0 #1 February 17, 2006 I got to check out a GS-1 today. Just an inspection not a demo flight and it wasn't attached to a rig. Wasn't able to talk to the owner about it. I gotta say it looks like a quality product, very nice workmanship. It looks very labor intensive to build compared to other wingsuits. I have a question regarding the design element of three tail surfaces for anyone who is familiar with why the tail is the way it is. I can understand trying to keep the burble as small as possible ( if thats even a reason for the tail design) but are there other reasons for, what looks to me like, a complex tail section. I'm not being a critic and am very aware that this suit is not about glide ratio with speed but more about slow glides and fall rates, I am just very curious about this part of the design. avenfoto 0 #2 February 17, 2006 i was under the impression that the split tail was to improve turn rate.... very cool suit..
mariavon 0 #3 February 17, 2006 The GS1 is designed to interchange arm and tail wings so that we can try out new designs quickly and bin them if they don't work. The add-in tailwing you saw has a slit with mesh to spill air through the middle, basically to improve stability. I visualise the wing like a large flat dish with water pouring into it. If one is holding the dish and one moves it slightly, the water begins to slosh from side to side, increasing in momentum and causing a very unstable situation .With a slit in the middle of the dish however, the sloshing left to right is greatly reduced. This was my motivation for designing the wing with a slit. There are still some problems with that wing and we are doing modifications to it before it is officially released. The add on tailwing is longer than the built-in one , to adjust the pitch and angle of attack to be more flat . (pronounced G - jii is the force that makes you fly!) Jii-Wings - no strings!
