backflying revisited

Recommended Posts

I posted several weeks ago asking for tips on backflying. I've been practicing, and improving. I now have a large range of fallrate control and can float up on pretty much any flock I need to. There is still a small problem though.

I'm having a hard time controlliing my forward speed, or to be more accurate - controlling my forward speed independently of my fallrate. Decreasing my fallrate increases my forward speed, and decreasing my forward speed increases my fallrate. So I'm usually either centered under the flock and sinking, or level with the flock but outdriving it. This leads to me flying weird oscillatory circles under the flock, which is funny since near the top of each circle I usually sweep by the base of the flock and give him a taste of my burble.

This is a problem many people are familiar with from when they learned to fly a wingsuit or a high performance wingsuit for the first time, and as we all know this can be fixed by using your legwing (bending at the knees) for drive control, and the rest of your body for fallrate control. While on your back though, your knees bend the wrong way, and can't really be used for drive control.

The best solution I have found is to keep the legwing partially closed, but it's still not perfect. The reason I think your knees work so well when on your belly, is because you are actually exposing the lower half of your legwing to the horizontal component of the relative wind and creating drag to slow yourself down that way, while keeping a large surface area projected downwards. When on your back and using the legwing-closing method, you sacrifice fallrate to compensate drive.

Anybody have any better ideas/comments, or extensive experience flying relative to other people on your back? I'm looking to have a wide range, in both dimensions, while backflying, basically I'd like to be able to do anything on my back I can do on my belly. Except pull, maybe...
