Doing my bm course 22nd aug weston uk

Recommended Posts

started static line course 18th may 2004, cat 8 plus fs1, 220 jumps now, will have 250 + by the 22 august, c licence now bit of coached sit flying, and camera suit jumps as well. To do bird man in the uk you need 250 jumps in 18 month period or 500 jump in total. Pass that bit of bpa rules any pointers to how will it go and what are the most important parts of the training, ordered my gti £575 uk if you ask me it was a bit steep in price, never mind!
The point of no return what a rush.

The BPA document is not rules, but merely recommendations. The final decision lies with the CCI (although BMIs/PFIs may help with their assesment).

I was going to say something flippant (I've had a beer or two) like the 22nd is a monday and you will have missed the course or by me a beer, but I will say this:

Flying a wingsuit is relatively easy. However, the most common mistakes made by fledglings are:

- flying a poor pattern. As I said, flying a wingsuit is relatively easy. Maintaining a good pattern whilst doing so seems to be the tricky bit. This is why we require very current and/or experienced jumpers.

- rushing deployment. Deployment is initiated at approximately twice the altitude and half the speed of normal freefall jumps so there is no rush.

- arching. This one is more relevant to the experienced jumpers, especially those who have done a lot of sausage grabbing. Whilst not dangerous, it is a hard habit to break and kind of defeats the object of wingsuit flying.

- asymmetry/looking down on exit. After deployment, the exit is the second most important part of the skydive.

I can (almost) guarantee that you (or anyone else) will not do their first wingsuit jump exactly as planned/briefed. If you do, I will buy the beer!

£575 does seem excessive. Using xe.com, the BirdMan list price of $849/€649 equates to £486/448. Where did you order it from?

I'm not claiming to be a phenomenal pilot (in fact I think I'm behind the learning curve probably), but since you did make an (almost) guarantee, I figured I'd note that I did happen to kick ass on my first flight. Meaning, nailed exit, nailed pattern, practice pulls, and actual deployment. Oh yeh, and I out-floated my instructor and had to dive to get down to him. I think it was beginner's luck through because after that I had a lot of problems that took me a while to fix...

There is always an exception. Same thing happened to me two weeks ago (nice one Danny), that's why I said "almost". Never say never :-D

Nobody likes a smart arse :-P
