going slow in an S3

Recommended Posts

Ok, go ahead and criticize me for number-whoring, but I have done a lot of flocking in my S3 and figured it was time to figure out how to fly it hard, solo.

In my GTI I could get 130 seconds on a normal altitude jump, and I can barely best that (135 seconds) in my S3, due partially to my skill and partially to my endurance (I can get speeds in the low 40's, but can't hold them for the whole jump). The main thing I have noticed is that the body position for slow flight seems different between the two suits. I my GTI, I would make a conscious effort to de-arch at the hips, as I've seen people say you should do for slow flight. During the flight, if I looked "down" (toward my feet), I could see my entire legs and feet, reinforcing that the de-arch was there. However, in my S3, I have yet to see more than the tips of my toes protruding past my hips in my line of sight. Every time I try to raise my butt up a little, so that I should be able to see my own legs, like I could in my GTI, I feel like I am on the verge of doing a front flip and speed up vertically a lot (rather than slowing down). Is this a valid observation? Can anybody else de-arch at the hips in their S3? I realize we're all built different anyway, but I really feel like in this suit it's all I can do to get flat, whereas in my GTI I could get "past flat"...

Honestly I don't think the S3 was built to go for time or slow flight. You can probably have the same FF time with a GTI. What the S3 does is cover a lot of ground. If you fly it slow and mushy you are defeating its purpose.

I stated few times that the S3 is very demanding. I think those who are interested in simple flocking of just having fun should not get an S3. If you want max froward speed or are interested in BASE WS than the S3 and the V1 are the right tools.

I think there are better suits for slow flying out there. The S3 gets squarely when not flown efficiently. That has been my experience so far or maybe I am not a good pilot yet.

More experienced S3 pilots can comment better.

Matt, your doing it again bro;) Don't ready more into it than there is. Bring this up again during the BMI course and I will go over it with you and everyone else.

What "if" you are engaged with simple fun flocking and the vast majority is also flying S-3s or V-1s and also flying in a group with comparable skill levels? Its more relaxing to fly the faster suits the way they were designed instead of slow on the backside of their envelopes to keep down & slow with a gti or classic.

I agree... I made a post right after I got my S3 that I actually find flocking EASIER in it than my GTI. The control range is more broad, and flying in the middle (or even low end) is pretty simple. It's flying on the upper end solo that makes me start to TWITCH. :D

Hey Matt,

talk to Perry, he is the go slow master ;)

Pull everything open, and push all that surface area down hard against the relative wind and keep it there :)
You can attain slow vertical speeds by doing the above, but you can also attain slow vertical speeds by flying the suit in a very efficient glide (a la Yuri) with high forward speed but the latter is more difficult.

Long flights,

I did notice (when I was last current!) that I was getting noticably better times in Perry's borrowed S3 over my S1; possibly an extra 15-20 seconds from 13,500 ft. The "maxed out" body position felt different - and certainly more strenous to adopt. I'm sure I was de-arched but needed to roll my shoulders forward more than I was used to. Got quite tired towards the end of the jump!

Well, that was my experience anyway...
