leoholanda 0 #1 March 14, 2005 After evaluating a number of GPS software, I think the best one for us birdmen is the CompeGPSAir. You cannot only connect and download data from GPS of many brands, but you can also view, edit and make analysis of the downloaded tracks in 2D (top view), projecting the track in a real aerial photo of you dropzone (any photo in USA can be get in www.terraserver.com), and also (that feature) view in 3D and even make an animation of the jump! Here is a sample animation! This is a low quality AVI since attachs cannot exceed 120k.Leo Holanda
TomAiello 26 #2 March 14, 2005 Do you have a link for the software? If you want to show a higher quality example, I can throw it up on my web page, so you can link to it from here.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
LouDiamond 1 #3 March 14, 2005 That is indeed some interesting software but I think it has paragliders more in mind than skydiving. Although some of the features are applicable to skydiving, a majority of them are not(ie moving map, track server, thermals, etc). The analysis portion is the only applicable part and the rest are gee-whiz features(animations, 3D maps) In fact, the 3d map coverage feature only covers portions of Europe and none of the United States. On top of that, you have to buy those maps in addition to the program itself for another $22 per map section/coverage area. The 2D maps cost another $27 and only cover Germany to Austria. The latest version of ParaLog with GPS intergration is capable of doing many of the same things but with skydiving and Wingsuiting it's primary focus. After checking out the prices, Paralog costs less than the $107-134 US that the base compe air program costs. Paralog also Downloads data from the widely used Pro track/Neptune devices, something the Compe software doesn't. Paralog can useTerra server map coverage which is free off of the internet and covers pretty much the entire planet or at least areas where there are civilian dropzones.Paralog is also capable of integrating your GPS data into your video playback from the jump. Most importantly, paralog also Logs your jumps and the associated information, all in one program. So unless you live/jump in the parts of Europe that they have 3D map coverage of, that software really isn't that good of a deal as you won't be able to utilize all of it's features and you'll only be able to use it for GPS data analysis."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
TomAiello 26 #4 March 14, 2005 Does Paralog do 3D mapping? Even without the background map, a 3D map of the flight path is going to be quite useful for some non-airplane folks. With the background map it's pretty much the killer app.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
Maxx 1 #5 March 14, 2005 How about feeding a flightsimulator app with the GPS-Data and creating a wingsuit pilot model. I think Xplane allows external GPS reading, but I'm not sure. Would be really cool if you were able to 're'fly your flightline on your computer.. Just an idea.. Max
LouDiamond 1 #6 March 14, 2005 QuoteHow about feeding an flightsimulator app with the GPS-Data and creating a wingsuit plane model If memory serves me correctly, X-plane already has a wingsuit pilot model available but it is not GPS capable. It has a NMEA string output that is generated by X-plane to drive other devices like moving maps but you cannot add your own GPS data into it AFAIK."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING

So it's still no dice with out the maps"It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
