NW Wingsuit Boogie and Competition coming up!

Recommended Posts

WHEN?

September 10 - 12, Friday through Sunday

WHERE?

Skydive Oregon in Molalla, OR -- http://www.skydiveoregon.com

WHY?

The goal of this boogie is to unite the birds of the Northwest (and hopefully elsewhere), get new birds in the air, and have some friendly competition. This will be a good opportunity to do some seriously scenic flocking with birds from the Northwest.

WHAT?

A good chunk of BirdMan's demo fleet will be available to accomodate new birds of all shapes and sizes. Go on your first flight, or demo a suit you've never flown before. Alti-2 will also be here with demo Neptune's to use throughout the weekend and in the competition.

Load organizing and big-way flocks will happen all weekend long. And bring those cameras for some big-way HP canopy and wingsuit relative flying.

On Saturday, you can put your money where your mouth is by competing in distance and delay rounds. As an added bonus, we'll have a waddle-n-chug -- a 100 yard foot race -- in your wingsuit -- to cold Northwest ale (or root beer), followed by some kickass cooking and a bonfire.

HOW MUCH?

There is no registration fee for the boogie (aka, we're not doing t-shirts). Dinner on Saturday is $10 (covers food cost and all profits go to the swoop pond aeration project). Take $30 off the normal FFC price this weekend -- it's two slots and $20 for ground and air instruction. Suit rentals are $10 per jump. For the competition, it's your two slots and $25 for the pot to be distributed to the top three contenders.

ANYTHING ELSE?

All wingsuit pilots will receive a wristband as soon as they've been briefed at the BirdMan booth or have received their FFC. If you're a BMI (or other wingsuit instructor) and you plan on attending, please PM me if you'd like to do instruction while you're here.

PM me for more details on the boogie, competition, or the DZ. See you in a month!

Two updates:

ONE: Due to a brilliant suggestion, we're attempting to put together one or two balloon loads on or near the first day of the boogie!

TWO: We're waiving the instruction fee for FFCs! You pay your slot, the instructor's slot, and the $10 suit rental. From there, suit rentals are $10 per jump.

Hope to see you out here September 10 - 12. And be sure to check out Freedom Jam this weekend at Skydive Oregon. In addition to the hybrids, freeflying competition, and swooping competition, we'll be putting together some flocks.

Big thanks to Nick and Veggie for bringing down demo suits and kicking ass on some nice flocks!

Fun times. It was small. The weather report indicated rain all weekend -- definitely a deterrent. However, we got loads up -- I had ten jumps, myself. Unfortunately, Sunday was when we most people were going to do their first flight, and Sunday was the only day that actually had unjumpable weather (except a handful of hop and pops). We blew off the competition due to weather and attendance, and also the fact that we were having too much fun putting flocks together.

We started with two balloon loads on Friday. It was absolutely beautiful out. Perfectly clear skies with fog on the ground at sunrise. I'll put up video. The visuals were amazing. Kirk and I got out at 4,300' -- cheated a bit says I, but we still got 33s each (pitching at ~2,500') and covered some serious ground. That's my bit of bragging for the weekend.

We got back to the DZ and wasted no time, making the first jump a six-way: a 5-way slot perfect wedge with video. The weekend continued with focusing on experimenting with technical flocking, and learning new ways to get to the next level of slot perfect, formation flocks. I put up a thread here about that.

I tried out a Classic II and a Xaos-27 98 (together) for the first time this weekend (yeah, beer, whatever). That was fun! I like my Katana 97 more, but that's a different story. The Classic was a blast to fly! I hadn't flown one yet. I found that it had a suprisingly good range. You can stay right in a flock easily, and still power off at the end. The yaw control is noticeably "looser" than the S3 and even the GTi, but that was really the only point against it. The forward speed is drastically less than what I'm used to, but I felt I was covering more ground in the Classic than I did in my GTi (though I get more lift/float out of the GTi). Lots of fun.

James and Leslie from Spokane cruised by for a couple of nice jumps in their new suits. We also had a sweet four-way burble hop dive with Nice, Veggie, Scott, and myself. Kick ass dinner on Saturday night courtesy of Harry's Cheri. It was a rad weekend. That's right... rad. Good times.
