notsane 0 #1 April 21, 2004 Does anyone have any first-hand experience skydiving with the S3 base pilot-chute pouch option? It looks easier to reach (vs reaching around the wing) but there are other issues to consider.
kevin922 0 #2 April 21, 2004 yes, i love it. Read up on it on flybirdman.com. There are times where you don't want to use it: backflying exits which put it in direct exposure to the prop blast/relative wind Otherwise i use it for 99% of my jumps and the others i've talked to are the same way. I do barrel rolls a good bit with no issue with PC extraction, etc. You do have to be very careful how you do the shrivel flap or you can end up with a PC in tow theoretically. It HAS to be permanantly attached to your bridle. http://www.flybirdman.com/learn/Birdman/basepc.html If you decide to use it, you need to use it properly. Install the shrivel flap, add some velcro to your rig so you can properly secure the bridle. Be safe. kevin
VectorBoy 0 #3 April 22, 2004 Yes, If you are going to use it, use it the way it was intended. Commit to sewing a bridle up on the shrivel flap. I didn't and it cost me my perfect record and a reserve ride. All of the above being much more expensive than purchasing a dedicated bridle just for the pouch. For me it was just an experiment and not worth a dedicated bridle- the reserve ride cost me more than buying a bridle just for my little experiment. Here's a link from late last year with some packing hints. Sorry, don't know how to make the clicky thing, so cut and paste it (unless someone can convert it into a clicky): http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=778621;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread Enjoy, fergbird

Tom, you are definately THE MAN - shall we call you the CLICKY-KING?!!!!! Anyhow, thanks for doing your stuff and fixing the link. That's a 6 pack you have in credit when next you are in Autralia. Using it is fast as f*¢k... no fumbling with the wing. Just a warning, make sure your PC isn't "bunched up" or lumpy in the pouch. The PC pack job should be thin and consistent, and only the top skin (no mesh) should be exposed to the pouch. Because there is no spandex in the pouch, an improperly packed PC can become "sticky", and result is a hard pull or an "impossipull" (PC won't come out at all), both of which I have experienced. I don't use the pouch right now, but will again once I have some new BASE gear and am balls-to-the-wall serious about taking a wingsuit BASE vacation."¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click
 notsane 0 #8 April 23, 2004 All. Thanks for your first-hand inputs. The key seems to be ... be careful and do it right ... always good advice if you want to walk home at the end of the day (my wife and kids appreciate that). I like the idea of the pouch, but only if that becomes the only place my PC handle resides. I spent enough time early in my jumping career patting around to find the handle on borrowed gear to know that sucks. Since I basically only do wingsuit jumps now, that shouldn't be an issue. I definitely will get it sewed on correctly. THANKS! The deployment sequence for a wingsuit is significantly different (starting from a different position, symmetrical arm movements, etc.) that I think it would be less of an issue than your borrowed gear scenario. However, your point is well made. I also think, in general, the folks who are are using the pouch are either BASEing or flying wingsuits for a majority of their jumps. (Side note, I don't have one either of my suits, so I can't comment first hand) j
 ManBird 0 #10 April 23, 2004 You know how you put your hands to your side and slide them up to the bottom of your container? With the pouch, your hands go right to the same place, but instead of sliding your hands up to the container, you just throw. It happens very instinctively. I've gone back and forth in the same day a number of times and never had an issue of looking in the wrong place."¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click
 Join the conversation You can post now and register later.
