jumpwally 0 #1 September 24, 2003 I know ,,i've heard all things about a lot of things,,but i can't help it,,I really like the way the Dolphin rig looks,,don't know why but I do,,so any pro's/con's or old wives tales ? thanx wallysmile, be nice, enjoy life FB # - 1083
skycop 0 #2 September 24, 2003 My older Dolphin doesn't have riser protection, my newer one does. I can't complain, I like my Dolphin(s). I think Wings look better and they are in the same price range. "Just 'cause I'm simple, don't mean I'm stewpid!"
kitof1976 0 #3 September 24, 2003 I don't know much about the dolphin, but what I heard of it is very average. If you are kind of short on cash definitely go with the Wings container. It's in the same price range as the Dolphin but it's much closer to the higher end container than the dolphins are. I find the Wings container also much better looking than the Dolphin but that's just me... "We see the world just the way we are...
AggieDave 6 #4 September 24, 2003 You most definately get what you pay for. Although dolphins aren't bad rigs, I definately would NOT want to FF any of them that I've jumped and any of the ones I've seen. For a couple hundred extra you can get a Wings or an Infinity which are lightyears ahead of Dolphins.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." dgskydive 0 #5 September 24, 2003 Infinity which are lightyears ahead of Dolphins. ----------------------------------------------------------- Gotta love the Infinity. I think it is the best rig on the market!Dom
kaerock 1 #6 September 24, 2003 I haven't dealt with many Dolphins, so I'm not sure if they still use Velcro on the shoulder flaps (LAME). But my opinion is that they are a mediocre knock-off of Javelins. I have the same opinion of Wings as well. I know people that have had their Wings modded to hell and back probably because the default configuration is sub-standard. Minimize the Velcro if possible, it's as cool as polka-dots. That's my tale, so far :> -R You be the king and I'll overthrow your government. --KRS-ONE
skycop 0 #7 September 24, 2003 Watch when using the term knock-off. The guy who designed the Dolphin is the same guy who designed the Javelin (Mike Furry). So the Dolphin is no knock-off. The Dolphin is a no-nonsense affordable rig. For those of us who are on budgets or don't have alot of disposable income the Dolphin is just fine. It's my understanding that's why Mike came up with the Dolphin, so cash strapped people could have quality, affordable new containers. "Just 'cause I'm simple, don't mean I'm stewpid!" kaerock 1 #8 September 24, 2003 This is not the sport to get into if money is tight. Skimping on equipment could cost you your life or a lot more in maintenance money. Personally, I'd save my pennies for the best when it comes to something that will save my life many times over. From MY experience, all of the Dolphin rigs I have been exposed to have left me with with a feeling something short of warm and fuzzy. I have recieved this less than favorable feeling when packing older Javelins as well - but a lot of that is due to how they've weathered. Evolution is a beautiful thing and I hope that Dolphins have evolved as well, I haven't check the DOM on the last few Dolphins that came my way, I couldn't tell you if those were older versions or not, but I wouldn't recommend one to anyone. -R You be the king and I'll overthrow your government. --KRS-ONE
jumpwally 0 #9 September 24, 2003 Don't get me wrong,,i'm not looking for a cheap rig,,im lucky i can splurge on the best. Its just that something catche's my eye about it...its got to be TSO'd and all, so thats not the worry. I mean what if it was the most expensive rig and Arizona Airspeed won with it,,what would the attitude be then,,know what i mean? Sometimes hype and image get people moving in a direction that eveyone seems to follow blindly...thanxsmile, be nice, enjoy life FB # - 1083
Casch 0 #10 September 24, 2003 I like the Infinity myself. Definately a bulletproof rig, with a very reasonable price. You can save around $200 off the listed price of $1300 on their site by going through a good dealer (or so I've heard). And they're very quickly gaining popularity. RMURRAY 1 #11 September 25, 2003 so if there was a 3000 dollar rig you'd be first in line to buy - thinking it was the best. And you probably think tye dye and SS hardware are "must have" options - give me a break. I only buy used now - I can't afford new - I'd rather jump more. About the Dolphin - I have never owned or packed one so I won't comment.
jumpwally 0 #12 September 25, 2003 Man,,you are exactly right !! The more expensive the more available options the more people think its the cats ass...i am not like that at all,,but i think most people process this as reality...i love the opinions here at dz.com...thanxsmile, be nice, enjoy life FB # - 1083
skybytch 273 #13 September 25, 2003 Quote Skimping on equipment could cost you your life IIRC, no one has died or been seriously injured as a direct result of jumping a Dolphin.

skycop 0 #15 September 25, 2003 Hey Bud, I don't think I need a lecture, I've been in this sport for a while AND some people have to watch their pennies. My point was simple, watch out using certain terms before you know your facts. I've jumped one for several years and never had a problem. In my opinion containers are kinda like keeping up with the Jones's. 'Nuff said Blue Skies "Just 'cause I'm simple, don't mean I'm stewpid!"
skybytch 273 #16 September 25, 2003 Quotelisa, what do you think? your'e in the biz and see people make decisions all the time I think any container will work just fine as long as the harness fits the person jumping it, the container fits the canopies that are in it, and the owner takes reasonably good care of it. Things to consider when buying a container - 1) how much do I want to spend (or can I afford to spend)? 2) which containers do I like the look of? 3) which containers are riggers in my area familiar with? 4) which container manufacturers have delivery times that I think are reasonable? There are other considerations but I think these are the most important. The answers to those questions are going to be different for every jumper out there. That's why it's good that there are choices at both ends of the price spectrum... I'd jump a Dolphin. It'd probably be safer for the kind of jumping I do now than the 1984 Racer I used to jump. kaerock 1 #19 September 25, 2003 My point was simple as well. I wouldn't buy one, nor would I recommend one to anyone. I'm not about to bite my tongue because I might upset someone that has some brand loyalty. It's an opinion, take it for what it's worth. If you want to discuss specifics: -I think they are extremely thin, will wear out quickly -Velcro wears out quickly and makes the equipment look trashy, needs to be replaced. -the design is antiquated as there have been leaps and bounds in technology that the Dolphins seem to be lacking -like adequate bridal protection -main pin flap protection, riser protection. -I don't like exposed pop-tops as they are easy to snag and a lot of time expose the reserve pilot chute. This what I've determined from the handful that have passed my way. If they have improved on these things, fantastic, it's inconsequential to me. It's still a pack job to me. Save your typing if you want to get into a Mine is Bigger than Yours competition. Longevity does not always beget competence, but I respect your opinion :> -R You be the king and I'll overthrow your government. --KRS-ONE

jumpervali 2 #23 September 26, 2003 Dolphin rigs are good rigs for the money, and there is a lot to be said for having black as the prime color of your rig. The only draw back I've seen of a dolphin is the container flaps are made of a lower denier fabric than most of the other manufactures. I've seen scuffs from bad landings burn through their flaps. Wings are good heavy fabric containers, but I like Javelins. I own 6 myself. You can make a Dolphin look like a Javelin by closing the reserve flaps the same way, but you still got thinner fabric container flaps. Take your time look at other peoples stuff and buy when the cold sets in, they all go on sell then. jumpervali
selbbub78 0 #24 September 26, 2003 I love my dolphin. I have an older dolphin (bought it used), sent it back to the manufacturer and got full riser protection, and bridle cover, and it works wonderfully in freefly. KATO33 0 #25 September 26, 2003 The newer dolphins are Free Fly Friendly if that's a concern. I currently own a Dolphin DOM 2002. I'll probably won't buy another because I like the look of other containers better. Not because I think Dolphins are unsafe to jump.
