flat spin skyflyer

Recommended Posts

i found myself in a flat spin in a skyflyer, immedeately after exit from a porter. cause may have been out of balanced exit from unfamiliar aircraft but the upshot is that it was really cool. i never understood exactly what a flat spin was until then. i could not effectively counter the spin. after two 360 rotations, (as fast as a snap roll), my three second brain caught up with my two second reflexes, i tucked into a ball for only a split second and reopened the wings into stable and true flight. too bad no video to study.

Funny that you mention it. It took 290 wingsuit flights, but I finally got myself into a flatspin. I only took a couple seconds to correct it because of advice I've received. I balled up and it slowed down the spin. Threw a wing out and stopped it to return to normal flight.

Somewhere in my hours and hours of video footage I have some video I filmed in Norway in 1999. It was some of the first BASE BM jumps out there or anywhere for that matter and I got some footage of Chris getting into a flat spin and having to cut his wings away and deploy before he smacked the wall:o. He said he was experimenting with the slowest vert. speed he could get and that's what got him into the bad situation. Maybe the slow speed of the Porter attributed to your flat spin??
Just a thought....

It's my opinion that when flying on the edge of stall that you are most susceptible to flat spins. That and just running out of steam when you are coming out of unusual attitudes. It's for that reason that I don't throw tricks unless I am carrying plenty of forward speed.
