MissMelly 0 #1 September 18, 2003 ok, i know this is really silly, but im about to start my first AFP and i was wondering what the difference is between ripcord and throw out, or if there even is one. ive been studying rigs and such so i go into the course with at least some knowledge. ive been reading about ripcord, pull out, throwout...is there an easy way to decifer the difference? also, is there ripcord on a javelin rig? thanks guys, and blue skies! Hang on to the ripcord, DON'T hang on to the throwout. That is the easiest way to tell the difference. A ripcord can be fitted to just about any main container including a Javilin with a few modifications. Mick.
brits17 0 #3 September 18, 2003 yes, there are differences between the three, diagrams would be nice right about now but here are their definitions: pull-out - a hand deployed system with a springless pilot chute. pulling the handle extracts the container locking pin and then pulls the pilot chute out into the airstream throw-out - a hand deployed pilot chute system in which the skydiver grasps a springless pilot chute and vigorously throws it into the airstream ripcord (my own definition) is a container locking device that deploys a spring loaded pilot chute in which the jumper will pull and keep in his hand a pilot chute is a small parachute used to initiate and/or accelerate deployment a ripcord can come on any type of rig, including javelins, however, throw out or pull out pilot chutes are most common today on sport rigs. now if you're talking about deploying a reserve parachute, sport rigs all have ripcords and a spring loaded pilot chute. there's no such thing as a pull out or throw out when we're NOT talking about a main parachute. hope this helps. _______________________ aerialkinetics.com
MissMelly 0 #4 September 18, 2003 thank you so much! that totally helped. i understand everything way better now. but one thing. when you say you grab the pilot chute and throw it into the airstream, do you mean you grab the ACTUAL pilot? or do you grab and throw something that pulls the pin? thanks again. blue skies
Hazarrd 1 #5 September 18, 2003 At the end of the pilot chute that sits under the container in a spandex holding (usually for BOC) there is a piece of hardware (plastic handle, hackey, monkey fist) that you grab and pull out. you throw it out into the airstream which generates enough force to extract the pin and deploy the parachute. .-. Casch 0 #6 September 18, 2003 Yes with a throw out, you grab a handle that is attached to the apex of the Pilot Chute, so you are actually throwing the pilot chute into the airstream. When the Pilot Chute inflates, it pulls the closing pin attached to the bridal allowing the parachute to be pulled out of the container by the remaining length of bridal.
