VIGIL AAD PRICE & RELEASE DATE NEWS!!!!

Recommended Posts

I have been getting emails wanting to know more about this so to make it better understood; I am not affiliated with selling/buying/trading/testing or anything else having to do with the VIGIL, I simply received this email from info@vigil.aero about 2 hours ago. I guess I should have been a dealer cause I could have already sold 2 of them:)

Dear Skydiver,

AAD nv/sa, the Belgian engineering company now started selling the VIGIL® parachute release system. It is the result of over 4 years of intense development by a highly qualified team of skydivers and engineers.

The VIGIL® is officially endorsed by the Relative Workshop, manufacturers of the Vector and the Micron, and SunPath, manufacturer of the Javelin Odyssey.

The US market will be supported by Vigil-USA, based in DeLand.

Please check our web-site www.vigil.aero for an in-depth understanding of the VIGIL®.

This safety device introduces multi-mode programming. It can be programmed in Pro, Student or Tandem mode by a simple push on the button.

The VIGIL® is entirely maintenance-free because there are no moving parts in the electronics. It does require as much maintenance as the ABS of your car! None!

The system is designed to function 4 years without changing the power pack.

Besides the unbreakable box and its interchangeable parts, the upgradeable software guarantees a low cost of ownership and a life expectancy of 20 years. And you get a free cutter after live-saving.

The unit also works as a data-logger. It logs the last freefall time, the total freefall time, maximum speed in freefall, number of jumps, etc... and all this is easily downloadable on a PC through the infrared communications port.

The display provides an alpha-numeric dialog in plain English language through its dot matrix LCD.

The VIGIL® is available for all skydivers in October, at the aggresive introduction price of 899€ (approx. 1000$) ex.sales tax and shipping.

The VIGIL® uses patented technologies offering unprecedented assets for the skydiving community.

The major assets are:
· Maintenance-free
· Upgradeable software
· Free Cutter replacement after life saving
· Multi-mode: Pro, Student and Tandem from one single unit
· Alpha-numeric Display programmable in any language
· Unbreakable Aluminum Alloy Box
· Ergonomic Design, up to 40% smaller than old style electronic AAD's
· 100% Industry Standard set-up compatible
· No external connectors, but a unique Positive Locking System (patent pending)
· Cutter uses cilindrical 'knife' for mechanical and thermal cutting (patent pending)
· Low Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
· No imposed end-of-life.

The VIGIL® is beyond any doubt the most advanced and affordable safety device ever conceived for skydivers.

Sounds impressive. I would most likely wait a while to get an idea of how it works in the field, how customer service is, etc.
Does the software take canopy flight into consideration? I'm loaded fairly heavily and start the landing approach at 1200ft, with a new system I would be pretty concerned about a misfire.

Well lets get this straight.....

It now costs $1,000 dollars U.S.? I thought it was like $600?

I just got a Cypres2 for $1225 at Square 1.

I decided not to wait for the Vigil because the Cypres
has over 10 years of experience with a really good track record.

Also, I now own a Protrack, so I really don't need those extra features.....

Hope this new Vigil works well.....I just think it pays to wait.

The $600 (actualy 673 euro's) was the price of the limited betaserie. They where given to teams and selected jumpers. Now vigil is starting shipping the production version witch has a price of 899 euro's excluding taxes etc.
If people from Poland are called Poles, why aren't people from Holland called Holes???

I'd like to know more about how a VIGIL is programmed to perform it's tasks. We've all seen that a single unit can be programmed to be used in student, tandem or expert modes.

What are the safeguards that have been implemented in the VIGIL, so the unit can not be switched, inadvertently, between the VERY different modes of operations ( for instance, the tandem mode would fire the cutter at a very different altitude than the expert mode?)

You can read all about it here.

Does the vigil have the water resistant features like the cypres 2 (which is the same physical size)? Also, the display unit looks cylindrical, which may not be entirely appropriate for the window system now included with all rigs.
I am willing to accept another excellent AAD manufacturer, but they should put up some data about durability and use time (with all the betas they claim to have, there should be lots).

To my knowledge, the Vigil is not water resistant; however this won't be an issue for probably 99% of the people who use an AAD. I do realize though that the pond swoopers may be drawn to this particular feature on the Cypres2.

I got to hold one a while back, and if I recall correctly, the display unit is more of an oval than a cylinder.

I agree, it would be nice to see the data; I'm curious though, does AirTec provide similar data?

Jimbo, your points are excellent. IMO, airtec is absolved of providing data at this point due to historical evidence. Vigil is trying to break into the market (a great thing), and to get out of the gate fast, it would be best to post data received through beta testing.

I asked the same question of Jo while I was signing up for the Beta program (before the whole Airtec cutter issue), and Jo said that it is changed at startup. He didn't give any more details, but the way he described it is that it has safeguards to protect it from being changed easy.

(In a similar safeguard as how Cypress is protected from turning the unit off accidentally)

I just got word from AAD that the orginal beta candidates can get them if they signed up before July1. alright!

'No, just wait. It will be shipped in 4-5 weeks by our DeLand office.

Thanks again for your patience,
Karel'

Ah.. Jimbo gets the prize..
According to this US PTO filing, it is done in the following manner:

12. P&R SET:

For activating the device, the user presses and releases subsequently the set button a number of times. The release operation is taken into account only if released for at least 2 seconds.

13. 3.times.>2sec?:

In this step, there is checked if the set button has been pressed three times at least 2 seconds. If no, the routine goes back to the IDLE state 11.

14. 3.times.>5sec?:

If the set button has been pressed for more than 2 seconds, there is checked if the set button has been pressed three times for at least 5 seconds.

15. DEF:

If the set button has been pressed three times for more than 5 seconds, this means the user wishes to modify the default settings of the device. In this step, the user can select the jump mode and set the real time clock. The jump mode can be set to "student", "professional" or "tandem". The jump modes will determine the default theoretical dive data with which the measured pressure readings will be compared with for determining the theoretical remaining free fall time...

I forget who posted a review of the demo unit they recieved but I guess it was very easy for them to screw up getting the unit turned on and calibrated correctly. They accidently changed the altitude or something with out meaning to.
