Bigger Canopies

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for a container for a 170, and I see that some of the javelin J-1's say they fit a 170, and others say they fit a 150 max. Someone told me that if it says it will fit a 150, it can fit a 170 and it'll be tight but not dangerous. Is this true? And why are there some J-1 's that say they fit 150s and some that say they fit 170s?

A J1KL will hold a 170. A J1 "could" hold a 170 depending on how good of a packer you are and what the humidity is like in your area (more humid = smaller packjob).

Before buying something that is technically too small for the main you plan to put in it - try packing that size main into that size and brand container a few times.

I really don't understand why anyone would encourage someone with limited packing experience to get something they'll have to stuff. Packing zp is a bitch if you've got the right size container. I can think of a number of things I'd rather do than try to put 170 sq ft of slippery snot into a space designed to hold 150 sq ft of slippery snot.

I have a J1 and find putting a 150 into it to be plenty challenging. Not too hard, but I wouldn't put something bigger in on any kind of regular basis.

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

All of this is great advice, however it is equally or more dependent on the condition of the canopy as well. I have a mirage designed for a 150 (but will take a 170), and I had an easier time putting my friends 170 in it than my own (newer) 150. So if you are putting an older ZP 170 in it, you may not have a problem.

I have a J3K with a PD160 Reserve and a Saber2-170. I'd say the Sabre2-170 fits in it snug, but not un-Godly so... but I've got over 2000 pack jobs and I'm a rigger, so I'm not sure how a new-bee would handle packing it.

Aside... I'm of the opinion that Sabre2's pack up smaller then Classic-Sabre's of the same size.

Aside #2... I know a gal at my home DZ that is fairly low time and she jumps a J1 (... not sure what flavor...) with a Classic-Sabre-170 in it. It kicks her ass some days, but she's been managing to close it... so, it is "do-able".

Anyway... I'm kinda about having a container that's not so tiny... i.e. small, but the correct size... so I can pack it faster and make more jumps in a day rather then have the absolute smallest container past what is recommended, but not usafe, that I can jam the main I want to jump into... but that's just me.

Anyhow... there's some more possibly useful info... but... SkyBytch said it best... go find a rig of the same size and try to pack your target main into it a few times and see how it goes and make your own, educated, decission.

;)

Well, different canopies, different measuring methods = different pack volumes.
Had a J1 with a 150, fitted just fine.
