How small a main can safely fit in a Javelin J7

Recommended Posts

I am looking at a used Javelin J7. Sunpath's site only says what their containers can hold up to. The one I am buying is coming with a 230. I would like to jump that for about 100 jumps then downsize to a 190. has anyone had a 190 or smaller in a J7?

Thanks, Tom

J7's are large containers. If I remember right they are sized up to about 280's in the main. That means they can hold 280's tightly, 260's normally and 230's are the smallest that can usually safely be packed in one. Going from a 230 to a 190 with out going to the 210 is a bit unusual too. There is no way I'd want to go 5 full canopy sizes down from the max it could hold.

Email rigging@sunpath.com and confirm, but I'm going to say a J7 can only hold a 230.

The J4 is built for a 190.
The J7 is built specifically for PD 280 manta and student canopies.

You would have a very squishy pack job puting a 190 into a J7 - this can lead to safety concerns such as premature deployments. I would not want to jump it.

Javelins generally hold one size either side of their ideal - therefore I really wouldnt want to put much smaller than a 250 in a J7 personally.

email rigging@sunpath.com and ask them their advice. Take their advice.

I have a Javelin J7 as my backup rig and I have a Raven III ( 249sq ft F-111) in the one I am have as a main and a reserve. I have also put a Triathalon 260 (ZP) and a PISA Conquest 230 ( ZP) , and a Hornet 190 ( ZP) in it as well.
All of them fit well and the closing loop only needed to be adjusted a little to go from those canopies in the 230 and 249 SQ ft to a bit tighter for the 190 and a bit larger when I loaned it to a fellow skydiver at my DZ who wanted to try out his 285 SQ ft BASE canopy so he could fly it a bit before doing base with it so we put it in the rig since mine was larger than anyone elses on the DZ that would let him use it for that. I packed the Hornet 190 and the other canopies in the same D bag...the Hornet was fairly new and packed up as big as the F-111 Raven III. the 285 was new and huge... as well as the Triathalon 260.. it packed very hard into the d-bag that is supposed to be for a 230 to 260 sq ft canopy. When you pack it.. make sure the grommets line up on the conatiner... and as you can tell.. canopies vary in pack volume sizes depeding on age, number of jumps as well as just SQ footage.
