CRW with Injuries

Recommended Posts

Hi all...I have an old knee injury acting up and weight makes it swell.

Not jumping is out of the question, so dont bother.

Anybody have experience with a similar injury. Do you use a special brace, ace bandage, or should I just go buy ten rolls of duct tape and wrap the chit outta the biatch?

Good judgement also seems to be out of the question for you. Not trying to be rude, but it seems fairly obvious. Good luck.

If you can run over rough ground and do a PLF without seriously aggravating the situation, go for it. I know people with bad knees who use knee braces; others just used the neoprene thingy. I also used to jump with someone who's knees were so bad he slid in every one of his landings. Blue skies.

I also jump with people that have no choice but to land on their ass, and I'm now becoming one of them.

However, I've been looking into knee braces...the hinged ones, and there are so many varieties. I'm basically looking for a recommendations on a specific braces to narrow down my research.

Thanks for your reply...Ciao!

Who the hell are you to tell me I don't have good judgment? and news flash buddy....YOU ARE BEING RUDE. What about:Not jumping is out of the question, so dont bother. do you not understand?

Here's a little history for your yuppy ass....I have 2 legs, 2 arms, and all the rest that comes with it. There are many people in this sport that have made great achievements with a hell of a lot less than that. So who are you to tell me no.

Perhaps you should go into the "Skydivers With Disabilities" forum and tell them "Good judgment also seems to be out of the question" for them too!

ANOTHER NEWS FLASH: I jumped with many a CRW Dogs and many wear knee braces. It is my good judgment to ask what kinds they wear to help the situation and provide some extra stablitiy.

Next time I'll be more specific in the heading of my post....Experienced only....Students please dont apply.

So out of curiosity....Are you one of "those" that wont jump on windy days, waits for that perfect no wind day....Cause if you do....People can say your judgment sucks ass too!

The duct tape would help to some extent, but a brace would be a better idea. Go to a medical supply store and try some on. Move around the store, jog a bit. If if feels good there, it will probably work for you. Don't know about your particular injury, but a good brace with solid metal lateral slats will limit the side to side movement that causes most pain ...and further injury. Probably cost >$50.

Now for landings. I have a reconstructed achilles tendon on my left leg, sewn on to a hook imbedded in my heel ...I'm very protective of reinjury. A couple of years ago my right knee started giving me problems. I wear the brace with an extra velcro strap over the brace right at the knee and tighten the strap before exit. I could run out most landings, but fear a mistep, chuck hole, stone, whatever could cause serious re-injury ...so I butt slide when I can land in a known (i.e. smooth and grassy) environment.

Brief hit on my feet and lower down to the slide ...watch out our sticks and such B| Landing out, I'll run it out or PLF. Wear pants with a low coefficient of friction :) Jeans don't slide well :(. Cheap nylon jogging pants (some sort of nylon, I guess) slide nicely.

Good luck!

Michael

;) Thanks Mike....I'm going to give that a try.

I have DJD and OA in my knee. It has caused a "crater" so now there is structural damage. Doctors say I'm too young for a knee replacement so I have minor surgery once a year (past 4 years) to flush out the loosebodies. Somebody mentioned the hinged braces, so I checked them out...(ouch-very expensive). However, I did see many velcro braces.

I'll try one on in the store, like yours, and see how it feels. I'd rather not limit my range of motion if I don't have to.

..and thanks for the tip on the jeans....I usually jump in them.

....and ouch on that ankle [:/], sorry to hear that.

Genn

Edit: Forgot Stuff:P

Just to clarify ...when I say solid metal lateral metal slats, I meant to differentiate from the coiled metal ones. The metal slats are hinged and usually contain 'stops' to prevent hyperextention. You can flex as much as you like.

Wear the jeans ...but under the nylon.

Hi there.
Interesting thread. I'm an old CReW jumper and damaged my knees with a combination of: 5000ft DZs, experimental CReW parachutes and landing rounds as a student many years ago. I find that, post-trauma, a light hinged knee brace is the best. Difficult to wear under jeans, better with some kind of stretch material.
Keep on jumping!
