Camera flyer's wing loading

Recommended Posts

hi,

I fly with a wingload of 1.3, which is roughly the same as the people in the formation. Have filmed 2 way's as well as a 27-way with it, and no problem. Just use the burble if you go to fast or to high, use your muscles (learn to front-riser :-) and it is always nice to have some lift in case you want to make nice shots from above&behind.
My rule-of-thumb : stay as close to the wingload as the formation flyers, and you should be OK.

It depends on what type of filming you intend. If you are going for "artsy" video and/or stills, I would recommend an elliptical sized to give you lots of range in both speed and lift. If you're after competition video (from behind, with a consistent field of view), you'll probably want a lightning loaded as heavily as you can safely land, and you'll have to experiment with front risers and cross control.

Yeah, that would be more the idea. Not competition, just for fun, good view, nice shots.

I am currently flying a Xaos 120 loaded at 2.1, but I can stay up with tandems in DEEP brakes ( at least for a while)

cool, thanks for the insight

Elliptical canopies behave 'funny' tho in all that turbulence, leastways the Stiletto's and Contrail's I've seen, as did my Safire, no idea about crossbraced.

Makes me happy always to have a Lightning, Spectre or Tri when I see that. Bump bump maybe but no cells collapsing, nose folding under etc. Fun to watch tho if you're not the one flying it ;)

I'm probably gonna try filming crew with a Diablo next year, see if that works...

I'm not doing anything artsy btw, just regular filming so I'm in the burble almost all the time.

One of the best CRW photographers around is Bryan Scott. His web site has a lot of info on CRW video technique and you can probably e-mail him with specific questions.

Bryan's web site is:
