dragplane question

Recommended Posts

did my first dragplane the other day (freeking awesome), but when I turned into it, I don't think I turned completely into it. If I realize that once I have already let up on that toggle, can I hit it a little more to get me completely upside down?

a dragplane is wayyy hot. You have to have at least a three stack and then the bottom person drops upside down.B| (leaving out a few technical details, of course)

Yup, go with a little more toggle. If you add too much, you'll just end up on the other side. :P

The coolest one of these I've ever seen was a 9-diamond with a dragging stinger. I don't have a pic handy but there is a large one at Kapowsin. I'll try and remember to take a shot and post it.

Not so scary, you're not really upside down, it's more like being in a downplane but instead of going straight down, the thing descends at an angle. The guy on bottom is just angle towards upside down.

The more canopies on the top, the more upside down the bottom guy gets.

When it's really steep - does anyone know if there is an issue dropping the bottom person - or will they still just swing forward and around their canopy? We always just drop the downplane and I've never done one with more than a quadraplane.

We did a drag plane with 3 Triathon Hybrids. a 175 piloting, a 160 in the middle and a 135 on the bottom. the 135 went completely vertical upsidedown. we then flew the formation around before we dropped the 135. the 135 swung completely out of the formation with no line slack at all. we then flew the bi-plane down to 135 and he docked again.

You can also turn it into a 3 way downplane by turning the dragplane with a sharp toggle turn. Fun, but loads of tension.

I'm wondering more extreme than that. The bottom guy is always upside down relative to the top group (whether it's one guy or a huge stack). Dragplanes just pick a descent angle to accommodate the formation - in the case of two canopies only (downplane) that angle just happens to be horizontal. I'm still wondering about vertical to gravity, not vertical to the other canopies.

It's likely a moot question, I'm thinking no matter what, the bottom guy will be at some angle such that his body is leading his canopy (in the direction of flight). Thus, "drag" plane - he's less flying upside down rather he's being dragged behind the rest of the formation. In that case, you could always drop him and he'll just swing under his canopy safely.

However, with all the sq footage above, it likely felt very close to vert even in your case.

Actually, in every single drag plane (or "pendullum" as the US Army Parachute Team calls it) that I have ever done or seen done, we first drop the bottom two people off and let it drop into a standard downplane before then breaking the downplane at whatever your SOP altitude is (ours is 300 feet under StarTracs).

What I was told (AFTER I was the upside-down jumper) was if they'd dropped me, I'd have swung back under my canopy (won't fall IN it). But the lines will go slack for a bit and when they become taut again it HURTS. Like a really hard opening.

This came from a guy who claimed to have had this happen to him.

Luckily we got dropped into a downplane, no prob.

My buddy in the 135 didn't have any problems. He said it was just like coming out of a downplane, only a little faster. I definitely think relative canopy sizes matter also. We did the same thing with a 135 piloting, another 135 in the middle and me in the 175 on the bottom. I was upside down for a second or two and then went to a shallow angle (more like a steep downplane). i was dropped solo and it was the same as a downplane (which it basically was).

Nah - it doesn't hurt at all being dropped straight out of the dragplane - its like a really good swoop. What I enjoy is being in a 2-way downplane - - either with leg grips or some method where you can have your hands free. The bigger canopy can go into deepp, deep brakes, and the bottom canopy can front-riser, and you can do a 2-man dragplane. They're fun. I've been so vertical like this my canopy actually went silent - rather wild.

But being dropped from upside-down is no biggie...
