New Lightning

Recommended Posts

New Lightning in the work courtesy of my mentor parting with his beloved canopy.

So, I want a tail pocket on the sucker. Should I send it to PD for the work or would I do well with a local rigger?

The standard Lightning tailpocket is somewhat overbuilt and uses full rubber band stows similar to a bag. The consensus amongst CRWdogs is that it should only have a closing stow and a freestow pouch (similar to a reserve freebag) and could be built a bit lighter (cotton would be great). This has been addressed by Rusty Vest of PD and a re-specification is in the works (see here).

If I were purchasing a new Lightning today, I'd make sure it conforms to the new configuration. Drop a line to Rusty at (rusty@performancedesigns.com) to find out on the status of the engineering change.

Thanks, I'd long since deleted the email he sent on the crwdog list. This canopy is about two years old so I'll contact them and see if I can have the new tail pocket added. I've jumped a canopy with the tailpocket you were talking about. Yeah, bulky.

I had my rigger sew a flap on the tail with somewhere to place rubber bands when I bought a Lightning without a tail pocket a few years back. It literally took him less than 10 minutes to do and I've got hundreds of jumps on it now. Check local before you send it to PD.

Thanks for the input. I got to jump it last weekend and the tail pocket will be done by this weekend and the next it's down to CSS for the 30th anniversary get together. Larry threw in the risers w/2in1's and the rig just because he's my buddy. Gotta love the CRW community.
