Using Neptunes with Night jumps.. please read if you have one.

Recommended Posts

I found a bug in the neptune last night while doing wingsuit night jumps, if you have a neptune please read this! I had my neptune replaced recently because my old one had hardware issues with the back light, this is the replacement with software version 1.16.

The first night jump worked great, unit worked as it was supposed to. Second night jump at 13K we had a lot of cloud cover so I had the pilot go to 9K, he went to 9k quick enough to make the neptune switch to freefall mode, which was no big deal. When I got out of the plane and actually started to freefall the neptune switched to some other mode and the backlight turned off. I went in and pushed a key to see what altitude I was at (the 3 second backlight when a button is pushed) and it said my altitude was NEGATIVE something... when I deployed it didn't switch to canopy mode, when i pressed akey again it said I was gaining altitude slowly.

used my protrack to know when to deploy.

Already sent an email to alti, but wanted to make sure everyone who had one didn't get stuck in a bad situation.

Kev,

See my post re my neptune resetting. Any similarities in the jumps?

Ian,

I just read the post - i'm next to positive that is the climb rate issue which has now been fixed. Which ver are you running? I had a similar problem in TX, we climbed to 1000 feet in the casa had to wait for fighter jets to clear the area before climbing more and it reset to 0 while we were flying @ 1,000. I ended up sticking it in manual mode to deal with that.

Kevin,

Thanks for the response. Roger emailed me last night (I must say I'm very impressed with their customer service so far) and pretty much said the same as you. I am running 1.8 (didn't see any updates on their website), but he sent me a beta link for getting the newer version, which I will be doing today or sometime this week.

Just to let everyone know. 1.8 is outdated, im on version 1.14.
Funny thing that happened with my neptune, im sitting at the bar and one of my friends ask's me "is that a new neptune" I told him yes, he then asks "arent they waterproof" I said yes, he then takes it and puts it in his glass of beer, "Yep its waterproof". But my wriststrap smells like Beer now.

Yeah I know (now) that 1.8 is outdated. Funny thing is that until I got the updater link from Roger I couldn't find the latest software on their site. Am I missing something?

from 1.5 to 1.16, in a couple of days.
Mmm, how long was this product being tested BEFORE release to the public?

Never been involved in testing electronics before, have ya'?;)

You can test & test all day long in an environment, but you won't know what you're really looking for until a product makes it out to the field.

Users will do things and use products in environments that you simply cannot plan test scenarios for.

I still give kudo's to Alti-2 because they're fixing the issues as fast as we're reporting them. Try getting that level of support for any other company.

And this is why I always tell people not to be the first kid on the block with a new toy....

Kevin I am surprised you went out at night with out a back up to a device you have had problems with...I know you had another audible, but why didn't you take a second visual?

Guess I had too much confidence in it. When I first started jumping the neptune I used an alti3 as well and once I got reliable consistent operation out of it I stopped jumping the alti-3. I had just had the unit replaced the day before for backlight problems so I assumed that it was tested to be used for the type of jump I went on.

It worked perfectly on the first load, but after we did some funky stuff (the fast decent, etc) it created a scenerio that alti had not thought up.

We were the last out and I had communicated with the other wingsuit that was with me the procedures in case this very scenerio took place, as I did have some concern after we were on the way to altitude about it functioning correctly.

Hindsight is 20/20 so they say.. i probably should have had a 2nd visual.

Which is way you never release it to public first.

Mmm, disagree, numorous errors have been surfacing after only a couple of not so very out of the ordinary jumps.

No argument here, although if you put a device like this on the market which has several flaws in it, you better be quick about fixing them if it's already in use by experts and novices.
Be honest, would you recommend this device right now to your friends? I wouldn't. In a few months or so you or I probably wouldn't doubt about it anymore.

Uh, that link that a few of us have isn't made for the public. So no, you weren't missing anything before, just don't give out that link to anyone if you couldB| I'm sure Roger explained that to you already, but just in case he didn't .. it is NOT a public link to get the updates.

Trailer 11/12 was the best. Thanks for the memories ... you guys rocked!

And if you don't mind paying $249 to be a beta tester then I'd say Alti-2 is getting a GREAT deal.

IMO they should have put them on the hands of many jumpers of differnt types for six months, and then released the units.

Me thinks they were in a rush to back up a premeture showing at PIA.
