kurtvdpoel 0 #1 August 27, 2003 I want the buy a used rig but want your opinions before I buy it. I have 75 jumps and weigh 175 pounds. I want to start freeflying. -Vector II -PD 190 main -Swift reserve -No cypres but I will buy a new one if I buy this rig What do you think about this rig? Can I freefly this rig? Thanks in advance, Kurt
phoenixlpr 0 #2 August 27, 2003 I suspect that PD190 is 9cell. Check this: http://www.performancedesigns.com/ninecell.htm I think PD190 is not for you. It would be overloaded. Get a ZP canopy. They fly much better. Dont buy that rig.
councilman24 37 #3 August 27, 2003 Also, there have been more than one version and 3 sizes of Swift reserve. You need to be more specific. If it's a Swift Plus medium or large (don't remember the sq ft 175 and 210 I think) thats probably ok. If it's the old 5 cell (yes kiddies, 5 cell) swift it's pretty old and not of truely modern design. I'd not buy one for my primary rig. If it's the small swift plus it's too small for you. While I've got 1600 non ZP jumps, maybe more, it's hard to recommend a non ZP canopy to anyone these days. ZP offers longer life and better performance for a given size, not considerering canopy design. As for freefly, I believe maintenance and fit of the rig are more important than design. But the freefly gurus will probably tell you it's not the right rig. More details are needed. Age, number of jumps, etc. And you should have a rigger examine it. If it's mail order have the right of return after inspection. There's nothing inherently wrong with these components, but may not be the best choice for your one and only rig. And I think a used 190 non ZP is a little small for someone with your experience. TerryI'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
bmcd308 0 #4 August 27, 2003 >>but want your opinions << Find a different one. The PD190 is a 9-cell F-111 canopy, and you will be loading it more than 1:1. F-111 does not like to be loaded up and will let you know by banging you against the ground. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com
Biscuit 0 #5 August 27, 2003 Hey Kurt, I got a great deal on a used rig that included a PD 190. I put about 40 jumps on it and it was tough going. I weigh about 15 1lbs less than you. The guy who sold it to me weighed about the same as you and warned me it landed "Like a dump truck". While it is true that it didn't have amazing performance, I learned a lot on it all the same. It was HARD to have a good landing- but it taught me a lot. For the past 8 jumps I have been borrowing a friends Sabre 190 and have had perfect landings on each jump. It might suck, but if it's all you can afford (like me) once you can land that you can land anything. good luck! davelepka 4 #6 August 27, 2003 Vector II - not so good for freefly. PD 190 - not so good for landing Swift reserve - will work for saving your life New Cypress - good choice New Cypress2 - better choice
kurtvdpoel 0 #7 August 27, 2003 Thanks to all of you for your fast opinions. Seems to me after reading your comments that I better let go this offer and look around for something else. Thanks again. Kurt
sundevil777 102 #8 August 27, 2003 Unless this rig is extremely cheap and you have little money, you could probably get a much better value. Especially since you say you will buy a new cypres. If you are looking for used gear, then why not save money and buy a used cypres also, lots of them out there. I bought a PD210 9 cell with 30 jumps about 300 jumps ago, about '93 (had a long layoff until last summer). It is still in excellent condition and lands me (230lbs w/o gear) very nicely. I have stood up all but maybe 5 jumps. I am not a novice, but I think if the canopy is in really good condition, don't rule it out, it depends on how it flies and what it costs as a component of the total rig. The swift 5 cell (~175) came in just one size, and is really not worth anything and will give lousy landings. The swift plus 7 cell reserves came in at least 4 sizes (~140, 176, 200, 225). The 200 worked beautifully for me with an outstanding landing flare. I now have a 225. Last year I sold my 10 year old 200 for $350, to give you an idea of it's resale value. The Vector II is outdated, and out of favor for freeflying generally.People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
