andybr6 0 #1 September 17, 2005 Just came back from Empuria Brava and thanks to some great coaching from Babylon I have got my FF1 [for the non brits' here it is the qualification that lets you do head up flying with others]. I cannot recommend them enough, I went out there with a "just about stable" sit with a view to getting a little better and by the end I could do all the FF1 stuff. I was wondering what other people have done when they have just got FF1 or the equivelent, is it best to stick to 2 ways for a while to build up skills? What is the best way to 'polish' my head up flying? ------------------------------------------------ "All men can fly, but sadly, only in one direction"
Zoter 0 #2 September 17, 2005 Congratulations !! Heres my advice, based on the fact that I can still remember what it was like just off FF1.... Find yourself someone at about the same ability or even better....somebody much better who you can jump with regularly. Practice 2 ways .....all day....and have set objectives for the jump....all day. Dont be tempted too much to get on the 'big way' that they are looking to fill.......at this stage of the game its not useful.....everyone is tempted to do this and as fun as a 'bigger way' can be ....often you wont learn as much as you would in a 2 way and its a bigger risk as well.....work up to bigger groups slowly Concentrate in your 2 way on getting tighter and smoother .....levels/heading/proximity. Ask a local coach or experienced freeflyer to set you 2 way challenges......things to do apart from staying relative.Things that help refine what you learnt for your FF1. Get super comfortable taking docks......and get comfortable taking side docks before you start docking above and below your partner. Workon your exits ( get out headup in just about every way you can....getting used to flying your body ...) and on your breakoff technique as well.....it'll really help to do that now before you move into bigger Freeflying formations. Get video , whenever you can........it'll help your progression loads. Hope thats not too arsey and helps. My coaching was not at a UK DZ but I am sure I can find some peop's at Headcorn to jump with. I am quite keen to travel round a bit now as well. My coach in Empuria recommended excercises like clapping my hands and holding a sit and holding my lateral straps to keep a good leg position when doing solo's. Did you find it quite easy to get people to jump with when you just got your FF1? ------------------------------------------------ "All men can fly, but sadly, only in one direction"
 Zoter 0 #4 September 17, 2005 Well thats why you need the sticker in your book .... Now you got it you can jump with anyone else with their FF1.... Check in at manifest and tell them you are looking for other FF1 jumpers to jump with and ask around. Most DZ's around London have a fairly good freefly 'scene'...Sibson always has alot of freeflyers at FF1 level....you might want to check it out. I hear good things about FFlying at Nethers and Weston too.....never been to either though. First of all I totally agree with Zoter. Try to do as many 2, maximum 3-ways as you can ideally with much better flyers. You can improve your flying much faster. The best if you can fly with someone who has a camera cause you can learn an awful lot on the rainy, cold days (which are most of them) just watching. It's very difficult but try to stay away from big-ways. I did both my FF1 and FF2 in the UK and although the coaching is pretty good you cannot judge someone's experience from the sticker in their book. There are a lot of big-ways being organized, which end up being scary zoo dives and you just end up not learning anything but being extremely scared. It's far too expensive to jump in England to waste precious jumps like that. Try to learn as much as you can in dynamic small-ways before you move on. Good luck and have fun!
