Belgian_Skygirl 0 #1 August 4, 2005 Hi, I want to get into freeflying and I read a lot about safety regarding the gear... so that is clear and logic as the fall rate is much higher. I understand as well the principle of the basic position to maintain the speed and to avoid a collision as going into the arch position when you go unstable gives the effect of a crowncork and this can be dangerous for jumpers or groups above you (you never know). Before I will try the first freefly jump, I will do exercises on the ground (I am doing this) , I practice as well my trackings and I am now trying to track on my back for a few seconds, as I know this is important to see if there is somebody above you and to make sure I will know everybody's position in the future (I don't jump with others as I first want to master basic skills for safety purposes). I know tracking must be done 90° on the jumprun. Everything is clear, but 1 thing isn't... I know that it is important to fly in the traditional arch position before pulling the main... but... how can I go into that position without having the crowcork effect? Or doesn't it matter if you are far from the others? I guess I must make a slow transition from the basic freefly position into an arch position? If I know, I can start to practice on sitfly. Are there any tips or exercices you can give me so that I will do it safely? I will of course practise alone until I can sitfly the whole fall, can track and make the barrel roll while tracking, I will make sure I will use the basic body position when I go unstable before jumping with others and trying to be able to turn and not to drift. So tips needed please... when I can do this a bit, I will take some coaching jumps of course!!! And when things happen safely, I can finally do some head up with others. I have another question as well: are there some preferable exits for freeflying? I ca practise these as fun exits and so work on my future freefly skills. I didn't do a freefly jump yet.------------------------------------------------- No dive, like skydive... wanna bet on it?

Go make lots of jumps and the little details will work themselfs out. Belgian_Skygirl 0 #3 August 5, 2005 I certainly will... But still... I wonder 2 things: 1. when a person tracks away from the group in freefly... should he just track away from the basic freefly position or is there another way? 2. Before arching in order to pull... I guess that is no problem asyou come from a tracking position?------------------------------------------------- No dive, like skydive... wanna bet on it? Extrakt 0 #4 August 5, 2005 Hello, I was told to compress my sit into the recovery position, then extend legs and flaten out to the backtrack, do that for a bit to watch the other person tracking off, then flip to belly track, track a bit more arch and dump. I start this at about 6500ft. If your jumping on your own then you could leave out the tracking from this but do the rest. eg. Sit, Recovery pos, Back, Belly, Dump. When I was learning(still am) at first I went out in the recovery position for exit. If you get trace 101, the babalon freefly DVD they have a great section on freefly basics. Its also has good examples of what to do at track off time. Couldn't recomend it more. In fact I think I might watch it tonight. Have fun. As you might notice I don't have many jumps also, so ask someone with more before you do anything to be sure. BETO74 0 #5 August 5, 2005 Back tracking is tricky most frequently you'll end up headdown or with a good pitch loosing precious altitude before pulling, I won't recommend back tracking in the beggining she should practice backtraking with plenti altitude or when she develop a good sense of altitude awarenes. Your descriptipon of the transition from sit to back track is accurate, I don't think it applies toa begginer. Do some 2 way jumps with people that freeflies and they will make separation from you in the beggining while you get it down sort of like jumping with a begginer belly flying it will be his/hers responsability to track from you until you get confortablehttp://web.mac.com/ac057a/iWeb/AC057A/H0M3.html
bbarnhouse 0 #6 August 5, 2005 I would suggest that you hire a reputable coach your area.(if you haven't already) Coaching can be expensive, but in the long run it will save you money. You'll get proper instruction and won't have to "unlearn" bad habits, which would cost you more money in jumps. Additionally, having video of your jumps will enable you to see the corrections that need to be made. Just my 2 cents.
Extrakt 0 #7 August 8, 2005 Quote I won't recommend back tracking in the beggining she should practice backtraking with plenti altitude or when she develop a good sense of altitude awarenes. I agree, I tried backtracking the first time while solo tracking (forgot about that). It also why I start this all at 6500 so I have a bit extra for error. I guess at first when starting to do 2-ways it would be best to go from sit to recovery, back, belly, belly track. I think this would be better than going straight to belly from a sit like I did when I started doing 2-ways. Gets you checking the airspace above you as you slow down so you don't cork people later on (I guess). Maybe on the first few solos it would be good to go from sit to recovery to belly, just to keep it simple. Feel free to critique this, I won't be offened. I would like to tutor one day so I like to think about what I would tell the student to do.
