freeflydrew 0 #1 August 3, 2004 I had the pleasure of spending 3 hours in the tunnel this past weekend... 2 of them were with our Freefly instructor, Joao Tambor (joaotambor@yahoo.com). I have to be honest and say that I learned so much in the tunnel with Joao, and want to suggest to everyone that they get in the tunnel with an instructor, and enhance their skills. He has around 700 hours in the tunnel and over 5000 jumps. Sean MacCormac (New School Flight Instructor) was also there and hopped in with us for about 10 minutes. I have also flown with Juliana and Fabian Se, who are also excellent coaches. Besides from tunnel flying's positive impact on your skydiving skills, it's incredibly fun to fly in the tunnel... I mean, where else can you run up and down the walls? I hear that Spaceland Anomaly have been known to organize insomnia camps there too!
Peej 0 #2 August 22, 2004 I fully second that bro, the tunnel is good stuff no matter what level you're at. I did about 90 minutes at Perris Skyventure, including a couple of coached sessions. It did so much for my general air awareness and really helped me focus on feeling the way air moves around the body. Plus being a bigger guy they really helped me max out my sit and back flying to the degree that i now have no problem slowing down to fly with smaller people. And the tunnel instructors at Perris absolutely raved about the time they spent in there with Joao, apparently the dude rocks! Good stuff. I should have built one when I thought up the whole notion fifty years ago.. .yeah I know Joao and Juliana and Fabian and Sean and Blincoe too... taught em alot about flying in that there tunnel... hell who dya think was the first to run up one and back flip to the other... course these days I mostly stick a daffy in there and do a little stalling... not too shabby in my old age either... course the tunnel instructors their hate going in with me... I get too crazy and they get pissed when i bring in beer in my water bottle!!! Dey got this one instructor though... always be takin sips from me water bottle!!! Bodyflight.Net 0 #4 August 27, 2004 Quote hell who dya think was the first to run up one and back flip to the other... don't mean to brag (ok, well yes I do) but John Suiter did.. we have video from before Skyventure opened in 98! Joao, Juliana, Fabian and even Sean are all good friends, and yes the ROCK in the tunnel!
oldbastard 0 #5 August 28, 2004 Yeah I hear John Suiter is a darn good tunnel flyer... can't wait to see if the tunnel in N. Carolina becomes a reality or not... that Phil guy who works at Venture likes to tell dem war stories of the early flyaway days... but i didn't think you could run up the walls there since the column doesn't reach the walls... course i only flew there once and they made me wear this ridiculous looking balloon suit... looked like my old brand x.... and then wouldn't turn the air up that much... lots of fun though...especially after a little whiskey! Bodyflight.Net 0 #6 August 28, 2004 Yeah John can run up the walls mostly at Flyway, but no I was actually talking about at SkyVenture like you were.. John was the original instructor who hired all the staff, trained everyone and worked with Bill to complete the whole procedure thing. It was certainly fun flying in there with paper still on the lexan, and in a new invention like that... but once the walls threatened to collapse on us, I just never felt the same again about SkyVenture.. ya know.. ? The N. Carolina tunnel IS open and available for booking... so no need to wait... it IS a reality! You can clicky my signature if you don't believe me.. we are booking time.. in fact, got students in a couple of hours!!! oh, and Phil & John are best best friends. Phil was actually THE FIRST PERSON IN HISTORY to WIN a Wind Tunnel Competition back in the early 90s.. he won 1st Place in the Singles Freestyle event and John & Chris Landon (owner of the N.Carolina tunnel) won 1st Place Doubles.. Maybe we'll see you soon!!!!!!
oldbastard 0 #7 August 28, 2004 Yeah... I think next time I'm in that area I'll have to stop by. Pictures I've seen look pretty cool... what's the airspeed like though? Cuz... it takes a bit of air to keep me flying... course I'm not happy til my skin starts pullin around the side of my face... (makes me look younger!)... Any decent watering holes around there? Flying always makes me thirsty!
Bodyflight.Net 0 #8 August 29, 2004 we're at 130mph and not even turned up. Shouldn't be a problem no matter what your size here.. and it's very quiet, no earplugs are needed.. there's a sports bar right around the corner and a campground with cabins across the street! Let us know when you want to come on out!
