Canopy Upsizing.....

Recommended Posts

I'm looking into the future for when I finally get cleared to return to jumping from my accident and wonder what everyone's thoughts on upsizing my main would be. I jump a Spectre 135 that I load at about 1.04:1 right now. I'm considering moving up to a 150 Spectre until I get full strength in my arm based on the logic that I won't be coming in as fast thus the flare point should be easier for me to reach without further damaging my arm.

Any intelligent thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Because you can't just run out and get a new main the day your arm feels well enough to get back in the air.

Planning ahead = good B|

edit: Oops, never mind, I missread that. If it's upsize or stay on the ground for a few months I wouldn't want to wait either....

And while I'm making an ass of myself I'll ask a silly question: Would a larger canopy require more strength to land since you're pulling on a bit more fabric when you flare?

yes but even under a larger main you still run a higher risk of reinjury if you are not completely healed in the first place. By no means am I saying not to upsize, I'm just saying that if you are worried about flying a canopy at a 1:1 wing loading then maybe it's still a little too early.

Doesn't lift scale with area as well? And how's area's effect on stall speed?

I can't remember the formulae, HELP!, but isn't there something to be said for a nice, more forgiving, bigger canopy to avoid injuries?
Johan.
I am. I think.

and let's also remember that speed equals lift.

Speed equals lift in approximately the same way that peanut butter equals sandwich.

It is a part of the equation, but without all the parts, all you really have is a lot of goo on your hands.

Once, in my not-so-recent stupid youth I did a jump with a cast on my leg. It was broken just above the ankle in a non-skydiving (beer related) incident, and despite being told to lay off jumping for at least 6 months by the doctor, I had to get up there again after two weeks. I decided to use a 285 sq ft student canopy instead of my bladerunner 150, figuring that it would be easier to land softly. Mistake. I flared it way too high and came down hard.

The moral of the story? Stick to your equipment - you know it well. Rather wait a while longer :)

I completely disagree. Your situation was a huge adjustment and you were jumping with a cast on.:S Lisa's talking about upsizing in order to gain more control over her landings and prevent from hurting her arm again. While I don't believe upsizing 15 sq ft will take any noticeable amount of pressure off her arm, she will definitely be coming in a little slower thus generally safer.

Staying with the same 7-cell canopy (Spectre) and loading it a bit less is probably a good idea in this situation. As to waiting until it's healed, she won't dare jump before she's cleared by her doctor, CPT Katie's order!;)

Mouth.. In my opinion. It will take more strength to flare a bigger canopy than the one you have.

Stick with the gear you have. At that loading you are plenty docile and you know your canopy. Just jump on days where you have a little wind so you don't have to work so hard..

Umm, respectfully: apparently you're wrong. Read weekend numbers. She did an RW jump today, and I bet she used her own rig :P!

NO I did not jump by myself becuase my stupid arm is still not fully healed or anywhere near strong enough to flare my canopy, so thanks to some wonderful friends at Skydive Atlanta I got to do a 6 way tandem RW with video for the sunset load last night.
