Freeflying in the Tunnel

Recommended Posts

I've had one short session of freeflying in the tunnel in Orlando. I can belly fly in the tunnel no problem, and I have a very solid sit in the sky. But, it was pretty difficult for me to get into a sit in the tunnel. I found that I had to hold my body differently than I would in the sky. So even though it was fun, I didn't think it was that much of a help for me skill wise. Although, the really good guys and gals make it look effortless when they go in there!

Just so you know, there is a certain progression that they have you do when you do try to freefly. At least, this is what I did with the coach I had. First you have to start out on your belly so you can show them that you are able to fly stable in the tunnel. Then, you fly on your back. After that, they start you out pressed against the glass wall, and then you work on backing up into the airstream in your sit. This is when it started getting difficult for me. And, I really didn't have a lot of opportunity to work on it because it was at that point that my session was over and I had run out of money. I wouldn't be opposed to going back and trying again, it's mostly a matter of lack of funds for me right now.

First of all...how big are you? The bigger you are the harder it's going to be for you to freefly in the tunnel. Now like they mentioned before there is a progression you must follow in order to freefly inside the tunnel. First you must should stability and other things on your belly, then same with back flying. After that you can practice sit-flying on the grate / grill and then lift off. After all of this, and it is a lot trust me, then you can ask about head-down flying. And if they agree then you would start out on the grate / grill and then take off. Let me say right from the start that for you to be able to do a lot of freeflying it would be best if you go with an independent coach, they can help you try more things than if you would go by yourself.

Another important thing for the tunnel is that drag there makes a huge difference. Drag is critical inside the tunnel, most of the tunnel guys have a special suit made just for the tunnel. And last but not least flying in the tunnel is hard because you have to be very static. Moving around like crazy will cause you to spill a lot of air and loose lift. I personally think that this is one of the reasons a lot of people find flying in the tunnel hard. The more smooth and controlled (static) your flying is the better you'll do in the tunnel. Also don't expect to be doing a lot of stuff with just one hour of tunnel time, it takes some time. I you need anything else just PM me.

:)

alot of people freefly in the Skyventure tunnel. As Andrea said, there is an approved curriculum that is used to teach people how to freefly in the tunnel. Once you've shown you meet certain criteria, you can progress to doing headdown. Unless you're about 90 pounds, you won't be doing sustained headdown. Carving is done in the tunnel all the time, but by people that have hours upon hours in the tunnel.

If you're around the 22nd of this month, you should check us out. There is a tunnel competition which should be pretty bad-ass.

If you have any more ??, call me at the tunnel. 1-800-skyfun1. I will talk to you about it as much as I can unless it gets crazy busy, then all bets are off. ;)

any opinions given are mine and not Skyventures.
