shotat 0 #1 August 7, 2003 I put in a post earlier asking for opinions on whether I should get chest rings on the new Javelin Odyssey that I am ordering. One fellow said and I quote ". If you do mostly RW, I recommend rings, if you do mostly freefly then don't use them. Reason being 1) Rings make it easier / more comfy to "move" your upper body which is good in RW 2) But rings could increase risk of rig coming off your shoulders in freefly at high speed. Now, I am more confused than ever about getting those chest rings. Maybe this is just one of those things where there isnt a right answer. All you freeflyers out there with chest rings, had any problems??? ***How come all the rich kids get to make all of the jumps?***
Jimbo 0 #2 August 7, 2003 Quote2) But rings could increase risk of rig coming off your shoulders in freefly at high speed. That's silly. A rig that fits with a properly tightened and secured chest strap will prevent you from falling out of your rig. - Jim"Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed. Vertifly 0 #3 August 7, 2003 I would definitely question that theory. Seriously consider getting the rings. Bang for the buck is in your favor.
diablopilot 2 #4 August 7, 2003 I seriously doubt it's a problem for freeflying. It can be a contributing factor to an increase in line twists if you wear your harness with the chest strap too tight (easy to do on an dual articulated harness)---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Grumpy 9 #5 August 7, 2003 I personally know of one case where a (slim) freeflier had to have the chest rings removed from his (custom made) Talon because even with the chest strap cranked up tight it would slip off his shoulders. Maybe you should be approaching this by asking if there any freefliers out there who don't have chest rings but feel their rig would be better with them. I've got about 800 jumps (mainly freefly) on mine (no chest rings) and have never crossed my mind that having rings would be an improvement. What you have is a product (harness) that offers an optional feature (chest rings). This feature has a possibly serious downside (security of the rig) but the benefits that people claim of them are slight, vague (what is 'bang for the buck'?) and certainly not enough to convince me. Just my 2c. PS this also came up on the total control discussion board a while ago. http://www.totalcontrol.com.au/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Advice;action=display;num=1044861686
diablopilot 2 #6 August 7, 2003 I'd say the problem with the slip freeflyes rig wasn't the rings, but the fact that the yoke was too wide for them. Remember, no one brand fits everyone the best. That said, I still am not in favor of rings but for a couple of other reasons. Shotat: Save the extra mone and spend it on jumps.---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. grega 0 #7 August 7, 2003 I have a mirage g4 with chest rings, and haven't had a problem yet."George just lucky i guess!"
garywainwright 0 #8 August 7, 2003 I have 2 javelins which are identical except 1 has all rings and one has none. I cannot tell the difference! If anything i prefer the one without - especially for harness turns when under canopy. I would spend the difference on extra jumps! have fun!http://www.garywainwright.co.uk Instagram gary_wainwright_uk

webracer 0 #10 August 8, 2003 Dude, That fellow has been misinformed or is missing something. Articulation is an advance overall, and definitely not a safety issue.Troy I am now free to exercise my downward mobility.
diablopilot 2 #11 August 8, 2003 QuoteArticulation is an advance overall, That is an opinion. Quoteand definitely not a safety issue. That is not entirely true. See my point above about line twists. Also the harness does have ore potential points for failure with chest rings, but it's kinda a non-issue.---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. RMURRAY 1 #12 August 8, 2003 check out rick's comments on his mal. If the link does not work just look for the thread on "soft reserve pillows and RSLs" in this forum. It turned into an RSL debate but I think the root cause of the problem was the shifted harness - was the ringed harness a factor? I would not get chest or hip rings but my rig is comfortable as is (also I don't freefly much - mostly into 4way)...rob http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=595670;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread
