Sony PC5 - pros/cons? Advice needed please

Recommended Posts

ALthough this is a camera qeusrtion, its a freefly camera question, so thought i would post here too - i am looking at getting a second hand PC5. I cant jump with a camera yet, but i want a good camcorder anyway for general on the ground use, and i know the PC5 is pretty widely used amongst the free fly community. Can someone let me know the pros/cons with this model - will it become obsolete amongst the camera flying/FF community anytime soon?
Thanks all

Will it become obsolete? Sony?!?!? Blasphemous!

I have friends who are still jumping(and getting GREAT video) from the old PC-1, 7, and 10's. The main difference is the resolutiuon. Yeah a PC-100 or 110 has higher resolution, but the difference is not readily noticed on your standard TV(they can only handle so many lines of resolution). You can see a small difference in the color saturation.

One thing that I don't like about the 5 (and 9) is that touch screen thingy. Besides that, for what most "camera" guys use their camera for, the 5 should work out fine for you. I have a PC-100 and only use a quarter of it's features, so it was "kinda" a waste of money.......

I have what may sound like a silly question, but anyway... I am a relatively new jumper and certainly don't have anything like the skills to jump camera. However, I have a PC7 and I'd like to use it just to record my own jumps, for purely entertainment purposes. Is there any reason why I can't/shouldn't do this?

YES
The question isn't the quality of the video. That comes much much later. The first question is SAFETY!!!! Wait until you get AT LEAST 150-200 jumps and then ASK a camera guy that you know to school you on the ins and outs of SAFE jumping of camera equipment. There have been AT LEAST 3 deaths of people due to camera main entanglements. If my memory serves me correctly they all had quite a few jumps. (IE somewhere around 1000 or more) Jumping a camera brings on a whole new world of dangers. Get some advice and a bunch more jumps before you get into this...;) All that said...it is darn cool to have a camera. So, keep jumping every weekend and lets get those jump numbers up! :)

Sure you can... when you have the skills to jump with one. Most people need about 175-200 jumps to build the airawareness and the needed skills to think aobut flying a camera. In the BPA they require 200 jumps

I guess that's just another reason to jump a lot! OK, I'll shelve the idea for a long time. The camera just hasn't been used in a long time, so I thought I'd give it a new lease on life. Oh well...
