VectorBoy 0 #1 March 3, 2002 What is that thing that looks like a whiffle ball glued to a picnic cup that Omar is using in Crosswinds in place of a spaceball. Anyone? and how is it made? Anyone? Class?" I do solemnly swear to uphold and protect the regulations governing the use of all airspace as described in the FAR's (all)and to maintain an altitude at or above 2500' over populated areas and not closer than 500' to persons or their property, victor airways and wildlife sanctuaries. indyz 1 #2 March 3, 2002 I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure it's just a different style of spaceball.--BrianHomepageAIM: suprmath
MarcusV 0 #3 March 3, 2002 It's the original spaceball - called "Skyball". Peter Unruh from Eloy has patented it in the early 90's (?) as "a reference point device and method for aiding in the training of free fallingparachutists or skydivers."Blues Marcus--Perfect speed, my son, is being there. - Jonathan Livingston Seagull
Kirils 1 #4 March 4, 2002 I have seen a similar device constructed from a tennis ball with a 1 foot ribbon connected. Heres how:Get a tennis ball and cut a 3/4" slit in it. Attack a 1 foot ribbon to a 2" piece of wood and stick it into the ball. You will have to adjust the fall rate and drift by adding lead shot (dripping with glue) to the tennis ball. An alternative method of adjusting fall rate is by adjusting the length of ribbon attached to a weighted ball A heavier ball tends to fall straighter but ribbon length and width must be adjusted to control fall rate. Skydiving is not a static excercise with discrete predictability...
PhreeZone 20 #5 March 4, 2002 A great way to injure someone on the ground if you don't know EXACTLY what you are doing is to build a skytoy. Fall rate is a major issue. Be under be a ounce or two and the ball will out float you, be too heavy and you will never catch the ball. If you have to ask for directions to build one, you probally are not ready to jump with one. Ballmasters are needed if you've never jumped with a ball to ensure your saftey and everyone elses on the grounds saftey. Skyballs can easly cause death or property damage. Most DZ's will not allow you to jump one. Ask your DZO about the rules before jumping one.Cause I don't wanna come back down from this cloud... ~ Bush
MarcusV 0 #6 March 4, 2002 Yeah, Phreezone is definitely right with this, and actually it should get printed in bold capitals.Don't do this without a ballmaster. Blues Marcus--Constant change is here to stay...
LawnDart21 0 #7 March 5, 2002 Last year I saw a 2 foot deep crater in the grass from where a skyball impacted. The A.D. Ballmaster just couldn't get to it. Moral of the story, it happens to even the best of them.......be safe in whatever you do."I live to EFS"Tom
