jose 0 #1 August 2, 2003 I recently bought a Safire2 149. Before I recived it, I had been jumping a Safire2 149 demo that opened like a dream. Some 600-700 foot openings that were so soft, it was like a dream. It had spectra lines. I recieved my brand new Safire2 149 2 weeks ago, and they fucked up the order and put Vectran lines on it. At least 1 of every 4 jumps the canopy beats the shit out of me on opening. Slammers, 90 and 180 degree off headings, and line twists so bad one time, my head was pinned. So I am thinking to myself, what the fuck is with this? Do Vectran lines affect openings? Will the canopy calm down after the lines and stitching is set in? There is only 20 jumps on the new one because I put my demo back in after dreading my openings too much when I am supposed to being enjoing my ride. Oh yeah, it was packed 3 different ways by 2 different people and still the same issues. Psycho packing, like the factory reccommends, was the worst on openings. Real slammers with that style. Could this also have something to do with the factory brake line settings being wrong? Edit to add: Wingload of 1.
darkwing 5 #2 August 2, 2003 I can't believe that it is an issue of vectran vs. spectra. It may be an issue of line trim. Contact the mfr and tell them about the problem. -- Jeff My Skydiving History
Jimbo 0 #3 August 2, 2003 Quote they fucked up the order and put Vectran lines on it. There's nothing wrong with Vectran, I'll take Vectran over Spectra any day. Who has packed the canopy? Get someone with a lot of experience packing brand new ZP to pack it. The slammers might just be due to the slider getting away from who ever is packing it. Ask someone else to put a few jumps on it. This will rule out anything you're doing as the culprit. Finally, call the manufacturer. I think you'll find that they're quite helpful. The only thing you can do here on the internet is bitch, and that's not going to fix your canopy, is it? - Jim"Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed. johnny1488 1 #4 August 5, 2003 My safire2 169 was awesome. If you have a problem with the canopy's performance (if you have a problem with the canopy at all) contact Icarus immediatly. If it doesnt open right then something is wrong. Dont let it slide because you will only dissappoint yourself. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" jmfreefly 0 #5 August 5, 2003 Yes, there can be a difference.. but probably not exactly the way in which one might think. I have heard that Atair (and possibly other mfg) send out their canopies slightly 'out of trim' with microline. over the first x jumps, the lines shirnk and the canopy goes 'in trim'. If Icarus does this same sort of thing ***** (which I have no idea if they do..) ***** and uses an out of trim spec, but puts vectran lines on it, then it would never 'go into trim' because vectran doesnt really shrink like microline. Therefore, the canopy would stay out of trim, and -could- be a cause or compounding factor for bad openings. Again, this is purely conjecture as to the cause. But, if you didnt want vectran, and they sent you vectran, I would take it up with the mfg. Icarus has given me pretty good customer support, except for the whole Crossfire issue (which pissed me off). On a side note, I thought Icarus didnt use microline anymore..
