Tube jumps

I dunno if this should go in the S&T forum but anyway here's my question :
Watching videos of tube jumps (thank you pilotdave) I got to thinking about deploying with a tube (me still being a low-timer who hasn't jumped with one yet). Anyway I can understand that if the tube is hand-held and it wraps in your main, you can simply chuck the tube and then chop. However what do freeflyers with the tube attached to their foot do? I know there have been a couple of fatalities involving tube jumps (Quincy this year?), so was wondering what the Emergency Procedure would be? Quick release on tube attachment to foot?

Not to detract from the importance of your question, but just FYI the Quincy death was with a hand-held tube.

The foot mount tubes are rigged with a cutaway system of a 2 ring or even 3 ring. Its cutaway the same way a skyboard is.
I've only jumped hand tubes, but find long (20 foot) tubes to be the best length. The long tube, if held at arms length at deployment, is higher the the canopy so it should not wrap in the lines. Shorter tubes end half way up the lines are are a no-no IMO.

after talking with rook and the swan dive today they both said this is not true....both have jumped with tubes that are tied on and do not have a release mechanism...

First thing is you have to take a long track to line out the tube behind you then pull. This means breaking off at at least 5K. Yep, thats our drill.
When we (my jump friends & myself on the perimeter) first started jumping with tubes, it was like- well, lets see what happens. Break high. So the guys did. And right away Larry's tube is in his lines just after the slider is down. (he was hand holding it) He laughed it off, but we could clearly see the ramifications of this.
..I think it wasnt as bad as it looked on the 2 videos, because he did break high and track away. After that it became the standard for our tube jumpers in our area.
Levin uses a bigger canopy, and not the Alpha84 on tube jumps. He has the tube on both feet. Its tricky to keep it deflated while sitting in the rear of the plane, however. He keeps it pushed down, everyone gets to the door and he is out last, usually. (The tube got all over me once just out of the door.) By the time he lands he has taken it off one foot.

If your friends are jumping with foot tubes and no cutaway systems...maybe they aren't ready to jump with tubes. It seems they haven't thought about all the safety needed for the sky toy.

I couldnt agree with you more ordinarily, but he is talking about Rook Nelson. So, it is hard to say what this really means out of context. I have never seen a tube without a cutaway system.
Safety is still a huge concern with tubes. On Larry's 1st tube jump it was all up in his lines. Damn, it looked ugly in the 2 film angles that I saw. But it quickly fixed itself, it hit the lines after the slider came down. Like I indicated in another thread, we all learned alot from those first few tube jumps.
I learned look out in the door! Not that anything would happen so much, but I couldnt see a damn thing but yellow fabric for a few seconds. hehe
