BadDog 0 #1 July 25, 2003 I wasn't sure where to post this, but I want to get input from riggers, so here it is: Does anyone know of an incident where a pilot emergency parachute has actually been used? The Capewell pin problem got me thinking about this. I don't think I've ever seen an AAD on one of these, and they only have the one parachute, so, if the pin fails, guess what? On the other hand, I've never seen one actually used either. I'm not saying that justifies the risk, but it does have an effect on the likelihood of a fatality. Mostly I'm just curious as to whether or not these things ever actually get used.

rendezvous 0 #3 July 25, 2003 Ok ! so how come all these folks exited the plane and found themselves to be stable before pulling while my AFF was one spinny affair !
crapflinger2000 1 #4 July 25, 2003 I am guessing you and they would have very divergent definitions of "stability" __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do?

pilotdave 0 #6 July 26, 2003 Well, its all about relaxing, right? It must be much more relaxing to jump out of a burning plane than an AFF jump with 2 instructors watching your every move. Dave
skybeergodd 0 #7 July 27, 2003 I know of one that I pack that did get used. Pilot experienced a fire in an aerobatic plane and I guess he felt he couldn't control it and jumped.
riggerrob 643 #8 July 28, 2003 Yes, I have two or three saves on PEPs. Back in 1993 a couple of Sukhoi pilots were doing aerobatics - over Colorado - when a control rod disconnected itself. Both bailed out and deployed their Butler rigs. Despite 30 knot winds on the ground, only one broke an ankle. The bastards never sent me any beer! Hee! Hee! After a second Sukhoi crash, the FAA later issued an Airworthiness directive to inspect all control system bolts for torque, split pins, etc.
