tomleone 0 #1 July 9, 2003 I am a new skydiver and I have seen a bunch of Altimeters for sale on Ebay and used gear sites. Is there anything I should know about purchasing altimeters used? Also I know a new cypress is like $1200+ but I have seen used ones for as little as $300. Is there any reason to stay away from used?Take risks not to escape life, but to prevent life from escaping ~ Author Unknown (but I wish I knew) YouveGottaTryThis.com

AndyMan 7 #3 July 9, 2003 With respect to Cypres's, they have a fixed lifetime. It is likely that the cheap ones you see online are approaching their end of life, and will need replacement soon. Also, cypreses need batteries changed every two years, and sent to the manufacturer every 4 years. It is likely that the cheap models you're finding online need both these costly maintenance functions performed. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. Jessica 0 #4 July 9, 2003 Cypres has a service life of about 12 years. The reason you're seeing used ones for so cheap is because they may only have a couple of years left before they must be retired. It's a good option for someone on a budget.Skydiving is for cool people only
Jib 0 #5 July 9, 2003 Most of the NEW Cypresses are "Cypress 2" models. The cost of Cypress in the US has also increased this year because of the exchange rate between the euro and dollar. You could buy the old ones brand new for $900+ a few months ago, but now, IF you could find one, it would probably be $1000+. Blahr 0 #6 July 9, 2003 I bought a used Cypres with 4 years left on it. This should give me time to replace my equipment a piece at a time and buy a new one when this one is done. I couldnt have afforded a new one since I was buying ALL my gear at the same time. Include its 4 year maintanance which was due and brand new bats it cost me about $500.00 total. kitof1976 0 #8 July 9, 2003 I think I saw a website that advertise they will sell you a new cypres at cost. I have not contacted them myself but if you are looking for a cheap deal on a new unit it might be worth a try. They are mentioning a price of 850 for a new units... here is there link: http://www.skydivesupplies.com/ "We see the world just the way we are... markbaur 0 #9 July 10, 2003 Quotea new cypres at cost... [$] 850 for a new unit... www.skydivesupplies.com. Hmmm. "New" implies Cypres II, but the picture on the website is of the original Cypres, which is no longer being made, and could be "new" only in the sense that it hadn't been previously installed. wmw999 2,565 #10 July 10, 2003 Try to get some sort of frame of reference about the person and why they're selling. I have a 28-year-old altimeter, so they can definitely last a long time. But it might be that they're selling it because for some reason it's been unreliable. So email them, figure out where they jump, why htey're selling it, etc. Worked for me when I bought a pro Dytter. Amazon 7 #11 July 10, 2003 My old ALtimaster I bought in 1975 still works like a champ.... but I would definitely have it checked against another one when you first get your used one. I do not rely on just a single device for altitude awareness. I have a new Altimaster Galaxy ( Pretty Red one) as well as a Pro Track. I also have the ultimate in altitude awareness with me on every jump... My eyes and a feeling of how long I have been in freefall( I start getting twitchy around 45 sec from 13k and start checking things on the ground and my handmount Altimaster) . Man I hate ground rush..... The Cypress has a 12 year life... if you find a cheap one it probably needs new batteries/ or the 4 year check by SSK. I bout a used one with a good year of use before it goes back for its first 4 year. I paid a bit over $575 for it... and I bought another for my backup rig ... also needs to go in for its 4 year in about a year.... cost $600.. both had new batteries
CloudOnMyTongue 0 #12 July 11, 2003 How much does it cost to get a cypress's 4 year check done? And how much do new batteries cost?
Jib 0 #13 July 11, 2003 You can find it on the cypress website. I think batteries are about $75 and maintenance about $160 every 4 years. -------------------------------------------------- the depth of his depravity sickens me. -- Jerry Falwell, People v. czechbase 0 #14 July 12, 2003 Just make sure that you are purchasing stuff that is in good/resonable condition with regards to the price asked. I bought a used altimeter and it had a bent needle and is a little inaccurate which means that I pull a little early... Cypress? Depends on your budget, what condition, any water landings and when the batteries and service is due, otherwise it might be better getting one that has a few years left until all the maintainence is due.
