Blahr 0 #1 July 8, 2003 I've just purchased a used rig. It fits comfortably but the handles are not where I'm used to them being. I was last seen jumping Vector student/rental equipment and this is a sport rig. Its a Javelin J-7 DOM Sept 91. Its in great shape :-) The handles are much farther to the sides rather than right up front like I'm used to. The question: Is this normal and I'm just seeing the difference between the student gear and sport rigs or does this not fit me properly? I can see and reach both handles with ease, but I'd say they are on my sides (towards the front) rather than being right up front. Other than this fact, the rig feels good on me. (I'm used to a belly band too, this one is BOC) Is this ok? If not, can this fit be adjusted or should I turn around and sell this puppy again and look for a better fit? sdctlc 0 #2 July 8, 2003 First of all Congrats on your first rig. Second, all rigs fit differently. If you think about how the student gear is set up in comparison to the "new to you" rig is set up, it sounds like it is just slightly different and that seems to bother you a little. Comfort with gear is an important aspect to skydiving BUT that being said student gear generally is not identical in set up or feel to a majority of "sport" rigs. They will all have the needed components, I not saying they are that different, but the placement may be different then what you are presently comfortable with. Handles being further to the side is going to be a product of how the harness and yolk are set up. A J7 is not the smallest rig on the market but you might be able to tighten the chest strap and in turn pull the handles over a bit more to the front. I have seen people unhappy with the position of the handles on the harness with different manufcturers rigs, some are set higher then others. With out seeing a picture I cant say if its sized correctly. Couple of questions would be if the rig is comfortable? Where do the leg straps and the MLW hit on your body, at your hip above or below? Does the lateral from the MLW to the container have a lot of play or does it hold the container on your back well? I would suggest that you have an instructor, S&TA or even an experienced jumper or local rigger at the DZ you trust give you a look see with the gear on. If the gear fit is OK and the different handle position is what is making you uncomfortable, have an instructor go over some emergence procedures with you and the new rig to help get you more comfortable with it. riggerrob 643 #3 July 9, 2003 Hee! Hee! You actually got "comfortable" wearing student gear? Don your new rig in front of your local master rigger and ask him/her to check fit.
