RSL's and wing loading

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone had an idea of what a practical upper limit wing loading on Main and reserve would be for RSL use?

I understand RSL's are not compatible with CReW, Camera and higher wing loadings - but what is high?

Thanks,

I'm postulating a SWAG here Tonto (scientific wild assed guess), but I would reckon the factor to be considered (as opposed to w/l alone) would be the canopy's propensity to twist up on you, and put you in a diving spiral. Forcing a cutaway, and reserve deployment whilst the jumper still has relatively high angular momentum, on their back etc, resulting in a spun up reserve.

It may be that high wing loadings and potential for irrecoverable twists/spirals are related, however there are some well known canopy models out there that have a reputation for twists, even at light to medium wing loads.

I just recently got a new VIII Micron with Skyhook. I've hooked my RSL back on. I load my Stilleto 107 at 1.5:1. I load my Reserve at 1.3:1. I see the Skyhook as a resonable update to the RSL to overcome the problem with cutting away from spinning line twists.
