PharmerPhil 0 #2 June 13, 2009 Define "broadcast quality." I mean hell, networks often broadcast video from cell phones if that is the best they have of a given incident that they think is newsworthy. That being said, none of them would choose any DVD source if they had a better option such as original HD footage, film, digi-betacam, or some other high quality original source that they shot themselves. The111 1 #3 June 13, 2009 Re: defining broadcast quality I've given HD footage to a network before and had it broadcast as seriously down-converted SD. My recent dealings with Discovery channel, I gave them some 4Mbps 720p mp4 samples (watermarked) of some footage that was originally 25Mbps 1080i HDV (m2t). I de-interlaced the samples to make PC viewing better. When they asked for the non-watermarked version, I gave them the original interlaced full-res full bitrate video, and they came back and told me they thought it looked worse than the original sample I sent them, and could I please re-send it with the same quality as the first samples? I spent like a hour on the phone arguing with them about this... if it looked bad on their machine it had to be a codec issue... there is no reason they would want to broadcast footage I had already de-interlaced, since that means it would be re-interlaced for SD broadcast and would end up looking like crap. I couldn't convince them, still curious to see how this one will turn out. www.WingsuitPhotos.com
flr169 0 #4 June 14, 2009 why I'm asking.... This guy wants me to edit HD video into 20min segments.(must be broadcast quality)his words... So I figured that meant doing all the editing in HD and then burning onto a blue ray disc.... Would this be correct.... My other dilema is how do I charge this guy... He is dropping off 4 plus hrs of video tomorrow... It's all video to do with nature... any suggestion or idea's would be greatly appreciated MikeLife's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting - "fcuk me what a ride!" PharmerPhil 0 #5 June 14, 2009 I would have the client tell you exactly what format he wants the video in. If he doesn't know, then it may just not matter. Is this actually being broadcast? By whom? Can you get in touch with whoever the network is and ask them? Even if it is just a local cable channel, someone there can probably tell you what they accept and don't accept (and if so it is very unlikely that they need or air HD material). Keep in mind that if you didn't shoot the original content, whether or not the end product is "broadcast quality" is to a large degree out of your control. howardwhite 6 #6 June 14, 2009 Wouldn't "broadcast quality" also refer to the color being within acceptable specs? HW
PharmerPhil 0 #7 June 14, 2009 Yes. If it is truly to be an OTA broadcast, then the whites would have to be within legal limits. Although I believe most broadcasters have filters to ensure this regardless of the source.
