wildcard451 0 #1 April 20, 2009 now that more and more people are starting to NLE the HD footage, and bring that to the tandem crowd, I was wondering what systems people are using to edit at the DZ. I am looking to purchase a laptop, and it can function as a desktop replacement, so I don't care if it weighs 9 pounds etc. What specs are people putting in to chew through SD/HD footage fast enough to keep up with those on a linear board. PC only btw.
dragon2 2 #2 April 20, 2009 HD or AVCHD? I'm fast with tandemvids but I can't really keep up with linear editors; I need up to twice the time they need. That's with tape and recording in HD, editing in SD, and with a quadcore or i7 PC. If I use my laptop I'm a little bit slower even though I have a pretty good laptop. My laptop specs: Core2duo P8500 (2.27 MHz) 4 GB RAM Nvidia Geforce 9400M GT 2x 320 GB HD 18" HD screen firewire DVD burner external eSata HD for editing Vista HP 64bit (!) Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 Not a small laptop and a fairly expensive one but it works. My i7 pc is cheaper and is faster though If you want to edit AVCHD in SD quality it's easier to keep up than with tape. I haven't tried editing a tandemvideo in AVCHD highest quality HD yet, that's a whole different story... Fast editing (like 1 or 2 minutes if you can manage it) is needed in all cases, this is a big timesaver. I'm presuming you're not burning to bluray here, but to a standard DVD. In which case you don't need to edit in HD. If you're shooting tape, record in HD but edit in SD, if you have a AVCHD camera, I'd shoot SD.. ciel bleu, Saskia

dragon2 2 #4 April 20, 2009 First question, what camera are you planning on using? Or what type, tape or memorystick. ciel bleu, Saskia
wildcard451 0 #5 April 21, 2009 My bad. AVCHD out of a cx100. Seems to be the chic thing to do these days.

Icon134 0 #11 April 21, 2009 Quote Btw vegas does not work with vista 64 bit!!!! It doesn't? But according to it's spec sheet it does... "Microsoft® Windows® XP 32-bit SP2 (SP3 recommended) or Windows Vista™ 32-bit or 64-bit (SP1 recommended)" And I just noticed that Sony now has Vegas Pro 9 available... (although it's not shipping until 11 May 09) Edited to add: As for Vegas Movie Studio... it may not be designed for 64 bit Vista... it will run in the 64 bit OS... considering I am running it in 64 bit Vista at home.Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife... dragon2 2 #12 April 21, 2009 Quote Btw vegas does not work with vista 64 bit!!!! So my laptop isn't running at it the moment? Works fine. Got both Vegas Pro 8 and Vegas Movie Studio Platinum on my Vista HP 64bit laptop. I'm sticking with Premiere Pro CS4 though. ciel bleu, Saskia
dragon2 2 #13 April 21, 2009 QuoteQuoteBtw vegas does not work with vista 64 bit!!!! how do I figure out if Im using 64 bit?It doesn't matter in this case as Vegas will run fine but you can check here: Computer icon on desktop > right click > properties (or Control Panel > System and Maintenance > System) System > System Type is what you're looking for, it either says 32bit Operating System or 64bit Operating system. ciel bleu, Saskia
DSE 5 #14 April 21, 2009 QuoteBtw vegas does not work with vista 64 bit!!!! Yes, it does. Vegas Pro 8/9 comes in two confgurations; one takes advantage of the 64bit environment, the other merely functions in the 64 bit environment as though it was a 32bit environment.
